It is with a heavy heart that I bring the news of Rufus Oreo Griffin’s passing. He was a King amongst cats. He lived very long, born in 2012.

He came into my life during my own complicated adolescence. He was just a baby; this picture being his first. As a kitten, he loved playing ball. I would throw it and he’d chase and chase and chase. He loved small spaces to crawl in. He made a kitty hammock using the underlining of my bed and would chill there. He had two favorite films: Finding Nemo & The Lion King. He’d leap to my bed and lay on the corner, watching the fish or the big cats roar.

Every time he’d eat, he’d request my presence and I’d kneel down to pet his fur, and he’d purr greatly.

I loved him dearly. And I knew this day would come eventually. He put up a fierce fight, as long as he could. I’m going to miss him every day of this life.

I know my baby boy is at peace — for he was surrounded by those who loved him.

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these posts… And that means a film is finished. After spending a year away from the camera, I was scared when I decided to do “morning.” Would I still be able to pull off making something incredible? I’m happy to say I didn’t make this journey alone…

A massive thank you to my life partner @guersom_n , who had the courage to step into the role of producer on this film. He showed up, held that reflector, offered his sage advice when I desperately needed it. You held me up, dear. Truly.

Thank you to @dstainfieldtwin !! I can’t count the number of films we’ve collaborated on. You are perhaps the bravest person I know stepping into front of the lens. You’re always in the moment, and always ready to make the set more lively. I can’t imagine doing one of these without you.

And the surprise addition. A grand thank you to a new collaborator, @itsmjago !! I knew from the audition you’d kill it on set. But each day, you did something that surprised me. So much of this film as you at the heart, and you kept it beating.

@guinstainfield is a bloody goddess. On every set we’ve been on together, you’ve saved my life. I decided to take on framing. But whenever I needed thy wisdom, you granted it. You’re an anchor. A warrior princess. Please stay in my circle forever.

@charliehomevideo MAKE THIS TESTIMONY KNOWN… THAT CHAR CHAR… SAVES… LIVES… They are the second half of this film. Their music moves me in truly unexpected ways. Just when I think my job might fall through, CHAR CHAR comes in and saves my skin.

And speaking of saviors… another warrior saved my skin this go around. Every frame of this movie is gorgeous because of my wonderful colorist, @zach_isnt_real !! You lent your expert hand and artistry to every frame of this film. I’m deeply grateful for you joining us in this pursuit.

And so… he turned 30. This life, as it has been to this point, can only be described as wild, crazy — but fruitful and fulfilling. And so much of that is because the grand folks in my life. I’ve made films. I’ve starred in films. I’ve been taken to places I’d never thought I’d go to. And there’s so much more ahead of me.

I’ve learned so many valuable lessons. Especially in the penultimate years leading to this moment. I share them for you all here: Accept what you love, and don’t feed what you hate. Embrace your art as YOU make it — and never allow anyone to make you feel ashamed about it. And live, operating with the belief and knowledge that there will be a tomorrow, and whatever challenges lay ahead that you will push through it all.

I’m thankful for each and every one of my friends, my family, and the folks just entering and who have departed this life. And I’m most thankful for @guersom_n for being an incredible partner in this life.

Now… onto the Dirty 30 celebrations. ;)

Well, ain’t this a flashback. I was rummaging about and happened upon the original handwritten draft for The Red Book. There was a slight difference in the way I began the project to how it wounded up. The original edition lacked a dramatic quality in the real world scenes that we tinkered with (all at the wonderful suggestions of @guinstainfield ), but all except one particular moment in the book scenes themselves survived our actual film.

It’s kind of wonderful seeing how it evolved. It’s certainly indicative of how the filmmaking process goes; there’s never solid ground but a rising set of stairs that lead you to where you must be.

When the pens & mouse pads were all set down at the end, it was a film I was ultimately proud of. But once I get a new PC that can handle the capabilities of Premiere, lord knows I’m returning to the assets to deliver the Director’s cut. ❤️

Fall 2022, I conceived of a wild, Shakespearean fantasy-coming of age tale that I started writing for my Screenwriting class. Spring 2023, I had at least 30 pages completed and…

They sat in a drawer.

I often thought of these characters. They never left my mind. But I was continuously busy. Les Egos, SoW, Red Book, Compass, Dearly Departed, and Indigo happened back-to-back-to-back.

Of course, in the year of our lord, 2025, I made it a mission to write. For those who know my process and how rigid it is, I had to find a way to implement that for longer-term workloads - it worked well for shorts, but now I had to harness it for the pilot script and a feature.

It was a toss up between projects. But Strange Magic I had figured out all the way to the end… These characters mean so much to me. They were an utter joy to be with for the past three months of writing.

Will it get made? I’ll do everything to make sure it does. But at 129 pages, I have to cut back and refine a bit.

Public release drop?! But Jacob! I thought you were saving those-

Yeah, I thought the same… If you’d ask me maybe a month ago that I’d do this, I may have said no. But things change. Governments change. And governments don’t like their people sometimes. In a weird way, this is part rebellion. Bringing the films out of the closet, if you will. They may have done well in festival circuits (I use “May”, cuz you never know when a homophobe is on the judge panel), but then… what? It only gets enjoyed by the few?

I don’t make films for the few, I make them for the many. In a time where rights can be stripped away, I think the gayer side of my filmography should be enjoyed in the comforts of the people. I want my films to be seen in all their glory, warts & all.

I’m not a particularly special filmmaker. I’m not a particularly special writer. But if any of this brings joy to anyone, then I’m doing my job.

Now, there’s more to come. I’ve got new things on the horizon. Some of you know what’s up my sleeve already, but there’s already so much in the works that you don’t. Call this the start of a new chapter. Maybe you might not like what I have to say in the coming projects, big and small. That’s cool. But Operation Jacob Is Turning 30 Soon And Has So Much More Up His Sleeve is kicking off. So deal.
