Nothing else matters

Two epics moments of our trip in Patagonia. The first shot was taken under the stars at Cascada Escondida. Luckily, I was alone at this moment of the night but if you zoom a little bit you can already see the lights of the army of climbers hiking towards Laguna de Los tres to see the sunrise on Mount Fitz Roy. This is where the following panorama has been taken. Seing how the rock needles of the Fitz Roy, Poincenot and St Exupzry illumate themselves was a spectacular moment. Despite the cold, we spent a long moment mesmerized by the view. Hope you like it 😉

Los Cuernos 2
Our trip to Torres del Paine from El Calafate was chaotic but we manage to get there with a heavy rain and low clouds at our arrival. In other word, no view on the Cuernos whatsoever 🤷 We just had the time to mount our tent and the sun popped up finally revealing the beauty of Los Cuernos 🏔️

La rivière (the river)

Music often transcends the images themselves and amplifies the emotions they convey. For this post, I simply couldn’t choose anything other than Pomme’s song "La rivière" , which illustrates them both literally and figuratively. @claudiaximenaro 😍

Come with me to the other side
Hold on tight, we’re going to cross
Hold your breath if you can
Don’t stop, close your eyes

Sometimes you’ll have to hide
Face the cold, feel the danger
But always remember
If all of this becomes too heavy
To carry

Meet me by the river
I picked up the most beautiful stones
Fly away if you’d rather
I’ll stay here, arms wide open

Los Cuernos

We came to Torres del Paine with them in mind, yet the Cuernos know how to remain elusive, so often veiled in clouds. And yet, when they finally revealed themselves, especially at sunrise, they offered moments of pure magic.

Shine on you crazy diamond

It’s time to move to the Chilean side of Patagonia, in the Torres del Paine region. In fact, this was the first part of Patagonia we visited. The atmosphere in Torres del Paine is very different from El Chaltén—everything feels wilder here. The climate, first of all, with strong winds, colder temperatures, and constant snow and rain, creates a truly raw and rugged environment.

The colors were also quite different from the warm autumn tones of El Chaltén, with a palette dominated by cooler shades of yellow and green. Among these cool tones, one in particular amazed us: the deep blue of the icebergs we were seeing for the first time, like diamonds scattered across the black sand beaches left behind by the retreat of the Grey Glacier.

I particularly love the first shot. The light at this moment was so low with only a ray of light illumating an iceberg in the background and the siloiuette of a walker in the foreground. I love this minimalism. Hope you like it too :-)

Some journeys leave a lasting imprint on you. The one we’ve just taken to Patagonia, through Torres del Paine National Park in Chile 🇨🇱 and Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina🇦🇷 , is certainly one of them.

I had long dreamed of those legendary peaks, Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre, Los Cuernos, but what moved me most were the autumn colors of the lenga forests. Hiking through this shifting palette, where greens gradually give way to blazing reds, is a constant sense of wonder.

What also left a deep impression on me was the sheer unpredictability of the weather: within a single day, the sky can turn from perfectly clear to a snowstorm driven by fierce winds in a matter of moments.

Patagonia remains, above all, a wild land, and it is precisely this untamed character that makes it so profoundly beautiful.

We spent 18 days in Patagonia, mostly camping, which gave me plenty of time to take a huge number of photos (more than 4,000). So you’ll probably be seeing quite a bit of this region on my feed for a while.

I was deeply inspired by some amazing accounts like @ramirotorrents and @tylekki , and it was also a great opportunity to meet someone wonderful in @clement.coudeyre .

Anyway, I hope you’ll enjoy this first series, taken during our hike to Cerro Torre and our stay at the Agostini campsite.

À rain of stars
At last we were alone. Alone in this breathtaking landscape. Alone to really appreciate the noises of the mountain, of the glacier, of the water, of each other. It was really a moment lost in time, just to us 😍 .

The photo is a composite of one picture for the foreground, one for the starburst, and one hundred for the star trails. I should have taken more for the trails but the result feels already pretty cool, no? .

The king

Fitz Roy is truly the king of this region of Patagonia. It is one of the most iconic peaks in the Andes, and in the world, especially because of its beauty. Rising at the edge of a barren steppe to an altitude of 3,359 meters, overlooking the village of El Chaltén, the majestic Fitz Roy forms one of the most breathtaking landscapes in Patagonia.

Fitz Roy was originally named by the Tehuelche people “Cerro Chaltén,” which means “the smoking mountain” in their language. This likely refers to the weather conditions, as the summit is often wrapped in thick, cotton-like clouds (see video 😉 💨 ).

The mountain was renamed in 1877 by the geographer Francisco Moreno, who was tasked with precisely defining the border between Chile and Argentina. After spotting the impressive peak in the distance on February 14, he chose to name it in honor of the captain of a previous expedition, Robert FitzRoy.

Fitz Roy was first climbed in 1952 by French mountaineers Lionel Terray and Guido Magnone💪 🇫🇷 .

Part of me came specifically to see this mountain, especially this composition with the “Cascada Escondida” in the foreground. This waterfall is “hidden” in name only, given the number of people who gather there at sunrise... Many other nearby spots are just as photogenic and far less crowded 😉 .

Feeling small

Standing in front of the Perito Moreno glacier, you quickly realize how small you are. But it is only when I spotted kayakers drifting at its base that the scale sinked in. Suddenly the glacier felt even bigger, almost overwhelming.
