✨ Some news! I signed with the fantastic, brilliant @arielestewart at @utapublishing to work on this BIG BOOK (and other projects). She encouraged me when I felt nervous to start. I’ve had some big feelings about the current state of injustices. When I read activist @alokvmenon’s quote about creating, I realized that my act of resistance is this story. The research fellowship I completed at the @thehuntingtonlibrary helped bring this idea into fruition and I’m excited to share more with you when I can. Until then, create because you matter. Our stories matter. by @jchenwriter

🐉 I’m OVER THE MOON to reveal the cover of my next book, HANGRY HEARTS, coming out March 18, 2025! I absolutely love the cover for my farmers market-inspired Asian Romeo & Juliet and am forever grateful to work with a fantastic team.

🧧💔😡❤️‍🔥 Here’s the synopsis:
Julie Wu and Randall Hur used to be best friends. Now they only see each other on Saturdays at the Pasadena Farmers Market where their once close families are long-standing rivals.

When Julie and Randall are paired with ultra-rich London Kim for a community-service school project, they are forced to work together for the first time in years. It quickly becomes obvious that London has a major crush on Julie. But Julie can’t stop thinking about Randall. And Randall can’t stop thinking about how London is thinking about Julie. Soon, prompted by a little jealousy and years of missing each other, school project meetings turn into pseudo dates at their favorite Taiwanese breakfast shop and then secret kisses at the beach—far from the watchful eyes of their families.

Just as they’re finally feeling brave enough to tell their grandmas, the two matriarchs rehash their old fight and Julie and Randall get caught in the middle and Julie’s brother finds out they are dating. Their families are heartbroken.

But it’s the Year of the Dragon, an auspicious time to resolve disagreements and start anew, and Randall isn’t going down without fighting for what—and who—they love. Could the Lunar New Year provide not only a second chance for Randall and Julie, but for their families as well?

Hangry Hearts is a funny, big-hearted romance about friendship, family, and first love—and being brave enough to have it all.

Three years ago, I spent two months researching at @thehuntingtonlibrary to write this adult historical novel. The research fellowship gave me the time to sit with artifacts and newspaper clippings and understand the history I’m now writing about. I’m so close to the end of draft number 4️⃣ and hoping that this final polish is it. For now. Btw, the application for The Huntington Library research fellowship is open! It’s an amazing opportunity. by @jchenwriter

I’m not a SA survivor. But I have known several. And victims are often left with no way to seek justice. I’m grateful that the Cornell Sun team of student journalists brought this story to light. Especially as journalism is getting harder to do. Let’s support them as they continue the good fight. Link to donate to the Cornell Sun in my bio. by @jchenwriter

Happy Mid-Autumn Moon Festival! We spent the day in Chinatown. First stop: @bakers.bench to pick up mooncakes and treats and fresh soy milk. Got pens & paper goods at @paperplant.co. Then we went to @chunky.things to get custom-made T-shirts. The line was super long at @phoenixbakery so we’ll have to hit it next time. The last slide is meaningful to me as I finish this write on my historical fiction book about LA’s Chinatown. 🥮✨⛩️ by @jchenwriter

Eighteen years ago, I married my best friend. Back then, I couldn’t have predicted that we’d have twins, get paid as professional writers, and share a home with many pets (okay, that one I knew!). Not only is Brendan a great father, but he continues to take the helm while I’m in book revision land. When I was going through it last year battling breast cancer, he held my hand, helped me shower, and sat with me through so much pain and tears. He told me I was beautiful when I felt like a scarred up mess. We’re celebrating today by dropping our kids off at a D&D campaign so we can have a nice lunch together. by @jchenwriter

I have been chugging along on a revision (draft 4) of my adult historical fiction novel. I asked my husband to take this photo of me so I could share a bit about my writing process. When people ask me how I can possibly write as a mom, this is what I share: I write in the in-between moments. While dinner is cooking. At 6am when everyone but my cats and I are awake. I carry a notebook in my purse and jot down ideas. I schedule writing sessions with a friend where we simply hop on Zoom, check in, then set a timer for 30 minutes. I also write fast. Freelance journalism trained me to churn out 1,200 words in a day because day-of deadlines. I apply to artist residencies like @vacenterforthecreativearts to take time away from my family to focus. It's not easy. I would rather sleep in right now, but this book means a lot to me. I can't wait for readers to some day get in their hands. But I need to finish this pass first. My twins are older now so it's a tad easier (in some ways harder). I hope this inspires you whether you're a parent or not to keep chugging along. We've got this! by @jchenwriter
