It would’ve been my mom Deb’s 65th birthday.

Today, I wrapped up my genre-bending, apocalyptic novel, MEAT DEPOT, and gave it a colophon. It took me just under 3 years to get here from literally nothing.

I celebrated with a big burrito. Pictures do it justice. Steak and chipotle sauce. Guacamole and chips to garnish.

Two celebrations of life in one day. Thank you, Mom, for always taking me to the library and encouraging my silly writing and doodles. Even that one battleship I ripped up in anger while stomping the hallway, you assured me I’d get it back in one way or another.

That was true.

Read my once-published story, ZOO KEEPER, about the day she fled the mortal coil. It’s the truest writing I ever penned.

Zookeeper Day

Everyone noticed when the modulars came. It happened over a weekend, and when we laid eyes on them, we were astonished. It was from the future: smooth edges, silver façade, yet it wasn’t a spaceship; there were wheels. Later that week, we had a zookeeper visit us. It was the first time ever I saw zoo animals. Koalas, lemurs, a toucan, and even a python! We all sat there, diverted, until the secretary came for me, usurping my innocence. My mother died that day; M.’s father did the previous year. My last memory of her alive was reclining on our living room recliner, snoozing. I didn’t know what dialysis was, but I hated it. We both were admitted to those modules in time, consoled by a faceless psychiatrist in the crisp, sterile air. I never questioned why; I thought God had all the answers. It became a cooler box for our demons, masquerading in sunshine stickers. I never got to hold the lemur. I really wanted to hold that fucking lemur. by @bring_a_blanket

The @upliftingvoicesproject is excited to announce our next FREE community event!

Our speaker series continues into year two with a conversation dedicated to:

TECHNOLOGY AND THE ENVIRONMENT: FROM DATA CENTERS TO DISASTER CULTURE

We’ll feature three local(ish) authors exploring our community’s relationship to green space—and how emerging technologies like AI and the rapid growth of data centers are complicating and threatening that relationship.

Join us for a thoughtful conversation about technology, the environment, and what these changes mean for the places we call home.

@pfinian is an environmental attorney who published an award winning sci-fi novel #Ice'sEnd which projects a hundred years into the future where water scarcity and capitalism collide.

@jdalewrites is a local author and editor-in-chief of @thirtywestph, who will speak to AI and ethical/enviornmental publishing.

Lastly, our headliner @robertficociello, is an author and prof of English. His academic work #AmericanDisasterCulture examines our cultural relationship with natural disasters, and his new children's book #LuciaAndMarcusGoToSpace features female scientists at the forefront.

Join our speakers for a Q&A and refreshments! by @bring_a_blanket
