Today is the day! It’s finally here. This was an absolute passion project for me, an experience I never knew I needed. I didn’t anticipate leading the makeup department but honestly God had his own plan and I’m happy I accepted the challenge. This might seem wordy to some but to those who know will understand. I can’t express my gratitude enough to @katorihall for seeing my ability to co create with her. These characters have been alive and evolving in her head for over a decade, she’s truly a genius. Special thanks to the producers @ianolympio @patrikianpolk and @allmybeautifulwickednes I respect you all so much. This cast was a dream, they all have these characters embedded in them but they were so willing to trust myself and my team, for that I love them all. Last but most important my team. When I say they made me feel so fearless. They allowed me to lead and to teach and in turn I learned soooo much from each of them. This wasn’t an “easy” show I’m grateful they stuck through it with me. They are all powerful, creative and talented. I felt like I was putting together Oceans 17 when we assembled lol. Had to make a separate post to thank the people who make Essence come to life for me every year. 🩷For the past four years, I’ve been lucky enough to work with the incredible Disney team and help lead the Glam Suite alongside my brother in glam, @derekjhair Huge thank you to @anth.sierra , @shannonfrancheall , and my good sis @mnavarette (not pictured) for always making sure we’re taken care of, supported, and appreciated. It never goes unnoticed.This year my team was made up of all Louisiana girls… including me. ESSENCE really said, “Let’s see how much we can pack into one weekend.”Fresh off tour, straight into the Disney Power of Joy Glam Suite. No recovery day. Just vibes and setting powder. 😂Somewhere in between work, my co-founder and I managed to sneak away for a little @booksandbordeaux field trip because apparently we can’t go anywhere without finding what we love. Priorities.Then came the concerts…Cardi had us outside.T.I. reminded me why Atlanta is forever home.And Brandy & Monica had my little millennial heart is healed lol. No footage of Tip…I must have been distracted 🤔🥰Now here’s the real plot twist…I went out EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT.There are way too many moments to fit into one reel, but every year this weekend reminds me why I keep coming back. The people. The culture. The music. The laughter. Books & Bordeaux co-founders, soaking it all in at @essencefest ESSENCE Authors. Being in spaces like this reminds us why we started. There was something powerful about being surrounded by Black authors and witnessing the beauty, depth, and celebration of Black literature. There’s a certain kind of magic in rooms where Black women take up space, tell their stories, and inspire the next generation to do the same.
