Freedom: The Sun

"To be free is not to have the power to do anything you want; it is to want what you can do." — Jean-Paul Sartre

Now we can embrace our true selves. We shed the things that have kept us covered. We toss that face in a jar by the door, the one we put on to show everyone we were who they wanted us to be. The Sun no longer allows us to hide. We are free to be exactly who we were meant to be, full of joy and liberated from the expectations of others.

This morning, I felt compelled to toss some charms. I don’t usually work with charms, but I looked up each item to see what it might mean for me.

The Pentagram fell in the health area. I learned that the letters of the Greek word for health were once placed at the five points of the star. The five points have also been associated with the five elements of earth, air, fire, water, and spirit, representing the perfect combination for health and wholeness.

The Key landed in the love area and can represent gaining access to someone’s deepest emotions. To lock something away and throw away the key is a way of making a bond eternal.

The Flamingo has long been associated with wealth and extravagance, while the Unicorn, as a one-of-a-kind creature, represents prosperity.

The Dolphins in the social area were also fitting, as they are highly intelligent, social animals known for their strong bonds and care for one another.

And finally, the Seashell landed in the hearth area. A seashell was once a home and a source of protection for a sea creature, much as our homes provide shelter and protection for us.

I was amazed at how these charms seemed to find their appropriate places so naturally!

What does this mean for me? Maybe it's a reminder that things can fall into place in ways we don't always expect. Perhaps I already have much of what I could wish for: a secure and loving home, family and friends surrounding me, enough money to be comfortable, and the blessing of feeling healthy.

What more could anyone ask for?

Awaken: The Hanged Man

"A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions." — Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.

Ideas and beliefs we’ve held for many years sometimes need a shake-up. The Hanged Man reminds us that it’s important to look at things from a new perspective now and then. It encourages us to remain open to opposing ideas that might give us food for thought. When we’re open-minded, we allow ourselves to adjust our actions or beliefs without feeling guilty for questioning what teachers, parents, clergy, or friends have taught us to believe.

When we view the world from a different angle, something awakens within us. Our perspective shifts, and we discover that we can never quite return to our old way of thinking.

Trust: The Fool

"Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase." — Martin Luther King Jr.

There are times when we can’t see what might happen when we make a choice. We’ve had to make many such choices throughout our lives, and sometimes we wonder, “What if we had chosen the other option?” Jobs, husbands, lifestyles, and education are all things we’ve had choices about. Occasionally, we find ourselves filled with regret over some of the choices we’ve made. But at the time, we truly couldn’t see how things would turn out.

When we can’t see what lies ahead, we can either sit on the sidelines, afraid to move, or trust and have faith that the universe has our best interests in mind as we take that leap into the unknown.

When things go wrong, we wonder: Did the universe make a mistake? Did we make a mistake? Or is it possible that those seeming errors in judgment were just what we needed to face along our path, pushing us toward growth?

Listen: The High Priestess

"It is only when the mind is silent that the truth can speak."
— Jiddu Krishnamurti

The High Priestess watches over our subconscious mind and helps us tap into our own intuition. She sits quietly, seeking no answers from the external world. She reminds us to shut out the noise around us, stop listening to everyone else's opinions, and reconsider the rules that have been imposed on us. Only then can we turn inward, listen to our own inner wisdom, and make decisions that feel true to who we are.

Wonder: The Star

"The world is full of magical things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper." — W.B. Yeats

The Star offers us a glimpse of hope, awe, and guidance. We look toward the future with a childlike sense of wonder and hope. Wonder asks us to shed old disappointments and look with trusting eyes toward a better tomorrow.

W.B. Yeats captures the essence of The Star, reminding us that wonder isn’t always about finding something new, but about allowing our senses to recognize the magic that has always been there.

When we let go of old, sometimes rigid beliefs, we open ourselves to seeing more clearly the mysteries that are still waiting to be unraveled.

Gratitude: Nine of Cups
"Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough." — Oprah Winfrey

The Nine of Cups shows us fulfillment and satisfaction. This is where we need to put on the brakes and think about how much more we MUST have before we are happy. It’s all too easy to think that if having one of something makes us happy, having two, three, or more would be even better. If we look around our homes, many of us have accumulated so much “stuff” that we just had to have to make us happy. And yet, how often do we even look at it or use it?

Instead of always wanting more, now is the time to be grateful for what we already have without constantly striving for something else.

It reminds me of a story my mother read to me as a child, The Fisherman and His Wife. No matter how much the wife was given, she always wanted more. In the end, she lost everything because nothing was ever enough. Perhaps the real magic isn't in getting everything we wish for, but in learning to appreciate what we already have.

This can be easier said than done. I know that, especially in this group, when I see a tarot or oracle deck being used that I don’t have, it goes straight onto my wish list. I already have more decks than I can count. Do I need more? Well, apparently, I do!

But, if it counts, I am absolutely grateful for all my collections. I’m grateful for my family, my living conditions, my pets, good food, freedoms, and so much more.

Sigh. It’s easy to sound like you’re in control and very wise in these posts, but in reality, they’re often just words I don’t follow and probably never will. 😂 Being grateful doesn't mean you can't want more.

Honour: The Hierophant

"If it is not right do not do it; if it is not true do not say it." — Marcus Aurelius

There are rules and wisdom passed down by others that seem to govern the world. Many follow along like sheep, content with the traditions and belief systems that surround them
.
Some of us prefer to challenge old beliefs and question established ways of doing things. We choose to define our own codes of ethics, not because we want to be contrary, but because we believe in thinking for ourselves. We don’t do things simply because that’s how they’ve always been done. Instead, we choose our path based on our own understanding of integrity and truth.

This is how we honor ourselves.

Connect: The Lovers

"I am all the time developing a very deep and beautiful relationship with myself." - Audre Lorde

I chose this quote because it reminds us that we cannot connect well with others when we are still at war within ourselves. Instead of looking outside of ourselves for completion, the better choice is to find alignment within our heart and soul first.

When we are at peace with ourselves, we can connect with others from a place of wholeness rather than looking to them to fill something that is missing within us.

Magic: The Magician

"Magic is believing in yourself, if you can do that, you can make anything happen." - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Magic isn’t necessarily about supernatural spells, but rather about self-belief, focus, and using what we already possess to shape the world around us.

The Magician bridges the spiritual and physical worlds with his magical tools, the same gifts and abilities that we carry within ourselves. We don’t need permission from anyone else. We are in control, and we have the willpower to turn our ideas and dreams into reality.

Memory: Six of Cups

“Memory is a resource, not a residence.”
— Dr. Edith Eger

Childhood was an anxious time for me. I brought myself up Catholic. My parents were agnostic and very anti-religion because of negative experiences with the church. I felt the need for a connection with God, so I just did it myself. I hooked up with a friend and her mother, who took us to every Mass and catechism class. I was given a great dose of fear, which is about all I remember. No matter what you did, you were going to Hell.

Then I switched to a Protestant church that seemed more in line with the teachings of the Bible, but it just added different fears.

My father, who adored me, was so worried that something might happen to me that he warned me excessively about anything that could hurt me.

My uncle sexually abused me as a young child, and when I told my mother, I was told not to tell anyone or my father would be angry and my aunt would be hurt. More fear.

My brother, eight years older than I was, delighted in scaring the life out of me with horror stories. I remember lying awake, clutching my covers in terror when the lights went off each night.

Childhood was something I endured, only to become a frightened adult for many decades.

So, even though the Six of Cups is about childhood innocence and fond memories, mine must have been received upside down—reversed. I allowed those memories to dictate my future for far too long.

NO MORE!

The past may have shaped me, but I do not have to live there. I am in charge of my destiny. I can’t be bullied by anyone, and I can stand up for myself.

It’s taken most of my life, but it feels good to go to bed at night feeling calm and secure.

Transform: Judgement

"Growth is an inside job." - Naval Ravikant

This quote fits the Judgement card beautifully, as it focuses on transformation through personal accountability and the inner work it requires. Who we were five, ten, or twenty years ago is not who we are now. We have learned to shed our old skins and, through deep self-reflection, step into completely new lives.

The Judgement card reflects this profound awakening. We have looked honestly at our past, learned from it, and used what we discovered to become a better version of ourselves. We have faced who we were and answered the call to become who we are meant to be.

We have been reborn.
