In Feb 2017, we accidentally created a viral campaign for our funeral flowers provider in Y&R - @saintjoflowers . This was when I was just a few months into advertising and haven’t done any viral campaigns for our clients. The idea came from a joke during a brainstorming session with my art director partner Myles Valle, and nurtured by my brother @janr.cruz (he gave the recommendation to make the flowers small so that people can display it on their desks.)

Armed with just crazy corny copywriting, a few sheets of colored paper, and prototypes from ninang Jo, Myles and I went to the office one Saturday to do the shoot, and then upload it on the shop’s FB page just a few days before Valentine’s. Big props to tita @lovemommyjojo for believing in us even if we were bothering them during one of their busiest times of the year. Now this has been a permanent product offering of their business since 2017, 9 years running.

The result: Pamatay Na Valentine’s Flowers was my first experience of a creative idea being covered by mainstream media - from ABS-CBN, GMA, TV5, Esquire, Spot.PH and more. It was an eye-opening experience that led to the foundations of how we would create viral campaigns for our clients in @gigilgroup .

A bonus: @badongabesamis actually convinced our regional bosses in Y&R back then to enter this case study as an official Cannes Lions entry by the agency that year! No metals won back then, but it was sure a privilege to be backed by the network for a chance at winning a Lion. by @jeanocruzfolio

This time last year, our team at @gigilmetama put together THE GRIND, a creative tech innovation that custom-brewed fresh coffee for @dmap_ph ‘s DIGICON attendees based on their eyebags. This year, it’s been shortlisted 6 times at the 2026 Boomerang Awards. Congrats to the whole team at GIGIL & GIGIL Metama who got eyebags while putting this innovation together in just 2 weeks 😂!
