IVORY BILLED WOODPECKER SPOTTED!?!?

Pals, some cool news. A while back I was commissioned by the awesome Listers bro @earlyworm_getsthebird, to make an Ivory Billed Woodpecker, the Bigfoot of the bird world, for their new documentary about tracking down this “possibly” extinct beast. That alone was so sick and was honored to do it for those awesome guys.

Just recently, my IBWO carving made it into the Spring issue of the Audubon Society mag! I’m gonna frame this bad boy and post it up in the man cave! It’s just a little shot but still so cool it is in there.

In honor of this momentous day in Jebby’s World I made a for you to enjoy about how I carved this bird out of extinction. The song is good too so make sure you blast it.

Thanks to @earlyworm_getsthebird for the commission 🤘🤘🤘🙏
Thanks to @kutzall for the awesome bits that carved this beauty
And thanks to my 10 year old daughter that filmed all this stuff lol by @jebbysbirds

Here folks is a genuine, hand carved, hand painted Belted Kingfisher (female because it’s got that red belt on). Also, I carved a little brown trout cause this king fisher got to have her fish!

Anyways, this one was fun because I used NO power tools , well except a band saw to get the super rough shape cut out. But, other than that, all the carving and shaping was done with a razor sharp carving knife I got from the Louisiana legend Jimmy Toups ( also where I got this chunk of tupelo wood, shout out Jimmy).

ALSO, I have been nerding out on the history and art of the American decoy carver. There are so many amazing styles out there and I am inspired by reading these books. A Virginia decoy carver, Doug Jester (1876-1961) would carve his legendary mergansers with these iconic 4 pronged combs. So adding that to my kingfisher was a little nod to the OG carvers. Also, the paint is way simpler than I normally do as a nod to that old style as well.

This was a commissioned piece. If you are interested in commission ing ol’Jebby just DM me and we will get something rolling. Cheers and have a great day y’all. God Bless and have fun!

Finished the Common Loon carving. This is my favorite one yet! Such a fun challenge to get the head shape and tilt right and painting all those dots while whilst watching Star Wars at 1 am was real fun. Thanks for commission @pointsnorthpodcast!!!

Very excited about my #woodduck #decoy. Thanks to @tmdecoy and his awesome book that helped me out with the process. I can’t wait to do more decoys. I think I have found my favorite type of carving style, old style decoys. Also this is up for auction to help kids who can’t afford camp get scholarships at @humelake . God bless you guys and looking forward to more carvings !thanks to @the_flying_dutchman18 for taking some nice photos of the duck by @jebbysbirds
