I’m honored to be playing music at @troyjackson207’s town hall in Lewiston on Sept 1! We gotta help him defeat Susan Collins and send him to DC - this is truly one of the most consequential races in the country this year and we just need to get this right, Maine. Please talk to your friends and family about voting in November, and we’ll see you on Sept 1st 🫡 by @jeff_beam

Tomorrow night 7/23, I invite you to come see my band & I play a concert on the rooftop at @baysidebowl ⚡️
The last time I played a roof in Portland was 1/31/19 with @1029wblm, it was the 50th anniversary of @thebeatles rooftop show, we made a proper racket, and it was real cold…
Come hear a set of original music tomorrow + also a set from @aedanmacdougall, 7pm July 23 on the Bayside Bowl roof 🌞

Jeff Beam takes on Laminated Cat with the deft touch of someone who’s spent years navigating the kaleidoscopic corridors of psych-pop and indie experimentation. Where Laminated Cat built their music from lo-fi, collage-driven psychedelia, Beam refracts it through his own layered, era-spanning sensibilities, creating a version that feels at once expansive, and intimate.

A fixture of Portland’s fertile indie-rock, folk, and experimental scenes, Jeff Beam has spent the last decade quietly building one of New England’s most distinctive catalogs. Praised by Rolling Stone as a “psychedelic trailblazer,” Beam’s music draws from classic psychedelic pop, indie rock, folk, jazz, and tape-loop experimentation, weaving together lush harmonies, hypnotic grooves, and richly detailed production. Across releases such as the self-titled Jeff Beam and (Is Believed To Have Been), his songwriting has balanced emotional immediacy with a fascination for textural exploration, creating music that feels both timeless and strange.

Originally emerging from Maine’s midcoast music community before relocating to Massachusetts, then Austin, and eventually Athens, Georgia, Laminated Cat occupied a singular corner of the underground indie landscape. Their music combined the homespun warmth of folk songwriting with the surreal collage aesthetics of the Elephant 6 collective, channeling influences like Wilco, The Beatles, Paul Simon, and Neutral Milk Hotel into something they can call their own. Recorded with the support of Apples in Stereo visionary Robert Schneider, the band’s music captured a sense of youthful idealism, creative freedom, and the isolation that often defines life in rural Maine.

That connection feels natural. Both artists share roots in Maine’s fiercely independent music culture, where community and experimentation often outweigh commercial ambition. Together, those affections create something that feels like a conversation across generations of Maine psych-pop. In Beam’s hands, Laminated Cat’s sprawling, eclectic vision finds a new clarity, a reminder that the state’s underground musical lineage remains alive, evolving, and capable of finding new meaning in familiar songs. by @jeff_beam
