After 50+ years of charging waves all over the world I’ve become the king of the one footers. Before I got injured two years ago I was riding 5’10” shortboards. Now I’m on a 9’0”. Amazing how things change as we age and recover from our self inflicted wounds.. I’m hoping to eventually get on shorter boards again, maybe just mid lengths, especially when the waves get bigger, but until then I’m just happy to pop up consistently and cruise down the line. I’m still struggling a bit trying to get back to surfing on a decent level after my shoulder injury. Looking back I’ve been lucky enough to have ridden waves that some people will only dream about. We all have to play the cards we’re dealt and make the best of it. I think of friends near my age who have been through much worse health wise in there everyday lives, and those who can no longer surf. It makes me appreciate my situation. Just being in the water watching everyone rip is very satisfying. Hopefully I can hang on for awhile longer and I’ll try to stay out of the way of all you rippers. As some of you know I have been struggling to pop up and surf on a decent level after so much time off after two shoulder surgeries. I try to “attempt” to surf away from people because I’m extremely embarrassed. I’ve tried several different longer boards with more float and I’m still struggling. I have had some good moments but they are far and few in between. Trying to come back after all this and the fact that I’m approaching 69 years old is wearing heavily on me. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to overcome. I work out religiously everyday trying to get back. 6 years ago I had to come back after another shoulder surgery and open heart surgery. That was easy compared to this. I’m hoping that it gets better when it warms up and we shed the heavy wetsuits. I really need to get tubed again. Until then try not to laugh too hard when I struggle. Well it’s been another year and after reading all of your New Year posts and comments I realize how lucky I am to have such a great family, so many great friends at home and around the world. Most I know personally and some I only know cyberly. Many are people I’ve grown up with, many are people of met traveling the world in search of the perfect wave, many I’ve met through my sons wrestling years, many are people I’ve met through other friends over the years, and some I’ve met working as a carpenter in the Monmouth and Ocean County areas. I just want to say thanks for putting up with me and I’m humbled to have you all in my life. Wishing you all a Very Happy and Healthy 2026! Hopefully it’s the best year yet! I haven’t been in this situation in awhile. Trying to bounce back from my injury setbacks and the aging process takes time. Hopefully my steady work outs will eventually pay off and I’ll be able to experience this ultimate rush again someday. There’s nothing like it.
