Paintings from Wondercon, photos from LA, words from my experiences.
After Wondercon I headed to LA to visit friends. I'm so glad I get to experience that city like I see it in the movies. Not like I hear about it from politics and podcasts.
The lawless vagabond feeling of Venice Beach at sunset surrounded by skaters, drifters, and barefoot feral children running their family bazaars.
Drinking and smoking late into the Hollywood night at Chateau Marmont. Enthralled by the evocative feelings of moving through a visual manifestation of a Lana Del Rey song.
Stepping off the monorail at the Getty as sunlight and canyon air wave into my eyes, lungs, and skin. Overlooking cliffside Tony Stark style Avenger headquarters mega mansions veiled behind cerulean atmospheric film static.
Voyeuristic neighborhood walks through California's flora Valhalla level climate where every plant from citrus to succulent is an exhibitionist constantly in blooming orgasm.
Enchanted book shops. Couture matcha bistros. Hella over priced Rodeo Dr. Swiss chocolate. Restaurants where reservations are mandatory and the phones eat first. by @jeffdekal

'Scorpia Amaranthine'
I met French fashion designer, @xavierbrisoux last year and he asked me if I would contribute a painting to his upcoming collection. He's a big fan of comic and fantasy art and he includes illustrations of his designs along with the photos of models wearing them in his lookbook. His abstract forms and unexpected design sense immediately caught my attention as well as his craftsmanship and the tenacious but, soft quality of his personality which is mirrored in his work. All of his pieces are hand sewn cashmere. by @jeffdekal

I revamped this Elektra painting from a couple years ago. Marvel is going to use it as a cover for a new first issue of Daredevil. Fixed proportions and played around with paint some more. by @jeffdekal

My cover for Supergirl issue 11. Slight nod to Mucha and Art Nouveau. I wanted to go more complicated with the design stuff but the deadline crept up on me. by @jeffdekal

I did New York Comic Con and Baltimore Comic Con, back to back weekends and I stayed in NYC for the few days in between. Such an adventure.
Love to everyone I spent time with and thanks to everyone who stopped by my tables.
Here are a couple commissions I painted during the shows.

Also, these are quotes that I really appreciated from two people who found me and enjoyed my work:

"Is it a Gucci ad or an X-Men comic?"

"Your work is demandingly quiet."

And here is one of my observational pieces of writing inspired by a father and his two sons at the airport:

Two tilted peas just outside of their plumped paternal pod bumped through the airport bag check line. Their fraught father causticly adjusting the straps of a backpack engulfing the larger pea like a turtle shell. This young boy's afflictions taunted my attention. He was like a cartoon character. An upper jaw protruding over an under-developed chin held structure for lips that twitched in rotation like a compass' quest for polarity. Contiguous eyes squinted to a melody that only he could hear as strands of yarn hung tangled in a rope's weave. Frayed feet stood at the ends of knotted ankles. The boy's focus was a humming bird's flight. Frozen in fixation before darting off unpredictably until the rancid nectar of his father's nervosa summoned him back to feed. by @jeffdekal
