@barconventber 2026 is knocking the door, so with a big smile on my face I'm looking back to this heartwarming memories of when the one and only @jeffmorgen , doctor @whiskywolff & I threw a party with the fabulous @fabelei_bar team and @heavenhilldistillery during last year's bar convent. Can't believe this was my first guestshift - super grateful for an incredibly professional and welcoming team and all the people who came by and made it an absolute blast. After thirty years working behind the bar, wiritng about cocktails, creating bar systems, and buiding tools to help run bars, I took all of this knowledge and all of these skills and built them into a powerful phone app. Created for people like me - folks who make drinks at home, but also for those who run bars professionally. I needed something practical, an app that I can use daily - behind the scenes as well as behind the bar. An app that can incorporate the suite of bar management tools Iā€™ve been using in a professional setting for the past thirty years with my personal database of cocktail recipes that Iā€™ve been tasting and tweaking nightly behind the bar for all these decades. Iā€™ve always been leery of a recipe app that would require me to enter all of my own custom recipes without the ability to get them out again. So we built in the functionality to export everything to standard formats such as plain text and spreadsheet. And while we were doing that, we added the ability to share recipes with friends through the app as well as via text message or PDF. In short, we built this app for folks like me: people that love making cocktails but also need some professional-grade tools that can help run a cocktail program. Itā€™s built for you to enter your own black book of recipes, but with the option to import all of my recipes along with guest recipes packs from my bartender friends around the world. The Choose Your Own Adventure seminar series is coming back to Texas in a few weeks! Iā€™ve done this talk format - where you, the participants, submit your talk topics instead of me foisting my own upon you - in Dallas, New York City, Phoenix, Seattle, and KrakoĢw, Poland. And now thanks to our friends at Sagamore Spirits, itā€™s coming back to two cities in Texas next month! Thank you, @imbibe for letting me ramble on about dilution and how it works in different cocktails. While obviously based in science, it really comes down to personal preference in the end. This is a love letter to smaller bar shows! Look, we all enjoy the two or three massive bar shows around the world once in a while: You get to see everyone for like five seconds, you get overwhelmed by seminars and parties, and generally have an okay time and thats about it. But I just got home from the Better Bar Show in KrakoĢw, Poland and Iā€™m still on cloud nine. Itā€™s a large and established bar show, but it felt so manageable and accessible and relaxed while still super fun and educational and wild. It was awesome for someone like me, who just loves this shit so much. One minute Iā€™m finally meeting @stan_harcinik for the first time and weā€™re immediately off in a corner and Iā€™m grilling him about how to use my rotovap. The next minute Iā€™m sitting in the audience listening to @theadacolemanproject and an hour later Iā€™m on stage in front of a couple hundred bartenders answering questions and telling stories (sorry for getting all choked up there towards the end, guys), and then an hour later Iā€™m meeting a bunch of bartenders from Prague and making plans to come visit them all the following weekend. Honestly, you just donā€™t get that kind of experience at a massive bar show. Everyone feels accessible to you at these smaller independent shows, like when I crashed @mixellany and @mixellany2ā€™s martini date and we all sat around and cracked jokes before I had to run to my guest shift. Or when I got to sit around for an hour with @denechauddeferal, @bart_behind_bars, and @valentino.girotto sipping a beer in the sun and talking shop. Huge thanks to @adam_frankowski and @karol.onyszko at Brown-Forman for sponsoring my time in Krakow, and of course to @mr.bobas and @ala_baczykmazur and everyone else who helped put on my new favorite time in my new favorite city.
