We are pleased to share the news that Adam & Eve has gone straight to No.1 in the Sunday Times hardback fiction chart.

Kate Elton, CEO HarperCollins UK and Jeffrey Archer's editor, said: ‘It’s extraordinarily bittersweet to see Adam & Eve hit the Sunday Times No.1 spot. It’s a book Jeffrey was so excited about, and so enormously proud of, and I’m just desperately sad that he’s not here to share this moment. He was a once-in-a-lifetime author, a natural storyteller who brought such joy to hundreds of millions of readers around the world. We were hugely privileged to work with him, and I know that he’s still with us in spirit, and absolutely delighted about his final No.1 bestseller!’

We would like to thank all of Jeffrey’s fans who bought a copy of Adam & Eve and thank all the booksellers who have supported publication. Thank you so much for all your support across the years.

It is with great sadness that we confirm the death of Jeffrey, who died quickly and peacefully at home yesterday, with family, between writing sessions, aged 86.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary, his sons James and William, and his five grandchildren, who all adored him.

He had a full and wonderful life, with many friends (some who sadly have already passed on too) with whom Jeffrey and Mary celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in Grantchester this year.

The family thank everyone for their kind tributes and support. Jeffrey’s life was filled with loyal friendships and deep interests – from a love of his country to books to politics to art to sport and Italian food – and he was truly a happy man (despite never reaching his ambition of captaining the England cricket team).

We have included a selection of photos alongside his favourite quote, which he liked to share with many friends as they navigated their ups and downs together. by @jeffrey_archer_author

I loved this book. I really did.

A book club invented as a cover story to hide islanders breaking curfew during the German occupation of Guernsey, which then became real. Told entirely in letters, no narrator, no commentary. Warm, funny, and full of the small daily heroisms of ordinary people.

Mary Ann Shaffer wrote one book in her life and didn't live to see it published. Her niece finished it from her notes. Between them, they got it right.

For Adam & Eve, it reminded me that occupation is not only suffering, it is also bridge clubs, forbidden books, and people becoming better than they thought they were.
