Following an awe inspiring launch of qürbət: sounds of exile at the beloved venue @autumnthree_ in London, we congregate again the same living room of sound on Sunday 4th October.

Bring yourselves, fellow curious minds, and prepare to listen deeply, both to the music, and ourselves. Come gather, lean into each other, speak softly and open your hearts 🫀💭

Our DJs will traverse into the sounds and cultures of their respective homelands, with soundscapes provided by:

dreams really do come true 💭 a round up clips of my set from sunday + some quotes that have sustained me thus far (scroll til the end)

this vision has been in my heart forever, for a while i wasn't sure if it would ever be real. slowly slowly, thanks to so many kind souls who saw my light helped me pivot closer and closer to the goal this has all finally come true. thank you to all the wise sages & mentors who helped me come to this dream of mine.

i am in awe of the beautiful people i am surrounded by, who have loved and supported me. thank you all for coming to the London launch of @qurbet.im, the celebration of my much anticipated lucky number 29th solar return, and in general being in my life!

I refuse to use the word community for the way it has been appropriated by bad actors in this cold city, but Sunday was a true collision of souls &warmth, and I cannot wait to continue to invite others to lean into each other and listen closely

so much love my heart swells for the future of it all 🫀 I am so loved and I am so grateful to be able to see it clearly now.

Please continue to look forward to the next chapter of qürbət, please continue to support softness in this city.

It's been a while since our launch at @kwia.berlin but we have been searching far and wide for a perfect venue in London that aligns with our mission and values, and life had us stumble into the lovely team at @autumnthree_. From the carpets, to the lighting, to the softness of the space, this is a collaboration of dreams. Safe to say we are beyond overjoyed to invite you to this little nook of East London, which will be the backdrop of the evening. As a shoes off affair, it is part living room, part music lounge.

qürbət: sounds of exile
nowruz @kwia.berlin in photos 📸

It was such a deep, emotional pleasure to host Nowruz at Kwia, uniting fellow Turkmen and Uzbek DJs @ayacantstop and @nisan__nisan__ who are each leading the frontier of Central Asian and SWANA music community in their respective cities via their collectives @temple__of__ and @slaystans.

Music, has always been, a powerful object of warmth, longing, resistance. And for the exiled Özdemir Erdoğan, in Gurbet, my closing song, and the namesake of the event he sings:

“To whom should I tell my sorrow, o clouds?”

“There is homesickness, which hurts the most
Tell me, is there news from the homeland?”

And

“Clouds, say hello to my love
Tell them that the day of reunion is near
If fate sent me far away from my love
What can I do abroad all alone?”

Though there was no one else at first, I realised at some point I am not alone abroad, that like myself, others too, are scattered amongst the world in our varied, never ending nomadic migration patterns. We, too, have felt the struggle of the complicated feelings we have for the homeland we left behind, and long for that same warmth of the community that we grew up under. Over the years, I have been blessed with more and more Central Asian people on my path to wherever I am going, which I once begged the universe endlessly for. I looked up from the decks at KWIA and I saw so many beautiful people, building a life on our terms, and not compromising our connection to our culture, which has been essential for the joy and survival of our ancestors.

I am really grateful to KWIA for the trust and for @nisan__nisan__ for taking a chance on the event & flixbusing all the way from Prague. @ayacantstop, (also came back to Berlin from Prague for me!) brought me back a small talisman from Turkmenistan, to which I have not been to in 15 years. My spirit reignited, knowing I am still connected by this small, woven thread.

Especially huge thanks to all the beautiful, free Turkmens and other Central Asians who are living unapologetically as themselves. I love you so much, and you inspire me more than you know. by @autumnthree_

Qürbət- Sounds of Exile launch/ Nowruz takeover @kwia.berlin curated by yours truly 🧿 @qurbet.im

Join us in our favourite community-forward sound bar in the world, for a night of celebration, togetherness and homesickness, with sonic journeys from the Silk Road and beyond 🐪 (a way too underrepresented region…) 🌏

Nowruz, marks Persian and Central Asian New Year 🌷 and takes place around the vernal equinox, determined through astronomical observation rather than a fixed point in time. It is a time for new beginnings, a celebration of new life, whether new born fawns, lambs, tulips or new chapters. It is a time where for many, the smell of blossoms mixed with petrichor, and fresh hope for a new beginning is in the air.

Upon emigrating, Nowruz celebrations for us, are often with found community, spanning across all sorts of cultural borders. Gurbet, in Turkish (or qürbət in Azeri) is a deeply poetic word: defined by homesickness, longing for one’s native land, feelings of exile, and being a stranger in a foreign land. Combining the celebration of Nowruz, and the complex longing for home of any emigree, I invite you to Kwia to experience a profound celebration of the feeling of longing for a home you once left, that you long to return to, but cannot, for number of reasons, including the fact the home of your dreams/memories may no longer exist.
