And that’s a wrap on The Color Purple! Directing this show was such an eye opening journey. And two casts at that! I’m beyond proud of our team including my co-director @drvalentine416 and our amazing choreographers @nat_a_doll @itssugashay @tezcalhoun_ and vocal staff @krystalhill05 @joshua_servel and Ayana. Our students did a phenomenal job and I’m very proud of each and every one of them for pouring their hearts out into this show. Don’t just believe in yourself! Bet on yourself too! Thank you to everyone who came out to Party in the Park! Our theatre students worked really hard and put on an amazing performance! I love learning and teaching Black History so writing this play meant a lot to me! by @jelly_jala

Oil Sheen the Musical is officially closed! What a phenomenal performance from our Primetime students. Had a blast directing this show, but it wouldn’t have been possible without our playwright and co-director @drvalentine416 and our dream team @nat_a_doll @itssugashay @krystalhill05 @tezgoes_in @itsbowie_ who poured tremendously into our students. Glad we got to come together again to create such a legendary performance. Gonna miss my seniors, but I’m excited to meet the next generation of young Detroit talent. The DYC Awards and Honors event last night was so amazing! I can’t believe it’s been 5 years since I joined DYC! Love this organization and my team so much and I have had wonderful experiences and opportunities working with them. I love bringing my joy of theatre to our students and I learn so much from every play and project. Wouldn’t be able to do anything without them and I can’t wait for you all to see what we have coming in the future. 💜🫶🏽 Stay tuned! #DYC by @jelly_jala

I REALLY don’t do long posts like these. This year challenged me in ways that I didn’t think were possible. In the last 12-15 months I lost my job, my great grandmother, got into a car accident, ended up in the hospital due to extreme stress, lost my best friend, and overall lost sight of who I was. So many days I hated waking up. I hated how I looked. I hated feeling so lonely. I felt so…stuck. It definitely felt like the darkest time in my life and I had been resilient before, but I had no idea how or even if I could make it out to the other side. So much pain and grief back to back to back mentally and physically broke me. But I know that sometimes you have to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. 2024 had 365 days and not every single day was awful. In those 365 days, I also got to see myself and DYC on Disney+, I went to Africa for the first time, I got a new job that I absolutely love, worked on a few film and theatre projects, moved my little sister into college, will soon meet my first niece, and I realized how truly resilient I was. I wish I could say that everyday I kept fighting, but I had many days where I had no fight left in me. Where I would lay in bed in the dark and could not get up. Despite it all, I’m extremely thankful for God, my village and my passions that have kept me through it all. I’m glad that I’m still here to witness what greatness I will eventually release into the world. I have learned so much about myself and others and I know that life is so so precious and beautiful. If you have someone you love, no matter your circumstances, tell them that you love them. Life is short too, so I’m gonna keep leveling up in 2025. Those who know me know I do all my talking in person (iykyk lol) but I feel inclined to speak because I feel like someone may see this and feel inspired to keep going.
