Epic start to the season. Captured on @whaleone_mooloolaba with @sunreef_mooloolaba. This humpback whale sure did put on a show for us along with 4 other individuals. Safe to say I’m excited for the season ahead.

BUCKET LIST SPECIES‼️

The flamboyant cuttlefish (Metasepia pfefferi ) and I’ve waited a LONG time to finally see one.

Tiny, ridiculously colourful, and basically walking across the seafloor like it owns the place.

That flashing colour isn’t just for show either, flamboyant cuttlefish can rapidly change their colours and patterns to communicate, camouflage and warn potential predators that they’re toxic.

Harlequin shrimp (Hymenocera picta) are among the most specialized predators found on Indo-Pacific coral reefs. Their striking coloration and intricate patterns make them a favourite of mine

These shrimp feed almost exclusively on sea stars, using highly adapted sensory and hunting behaviors to locate and subdue their prey. They are often observed in mated pairs, a reproductive strategy that may improve hunting efficiency and territory defense.

Despite their delicate appearance, harlequin shrimp play a unique ecological role within reef ecosystems, demonstrating how highly specialized feeding strategies can evolve in marine environments.

The mosaic octopus (Thaumoctopus mimicus) a master of dynamic camouflage. This individual is only a few centimeters long and can continually altered its coloration and skin texture to perfectly match the reef substrate. Highlight of my week! by @jeminthewild
