The view from a friends new apartment during our book club meeting this week.

We have been living here in Exeter for nearly forty years and each time I enter into the Cathedral Close I am astonished by the building and am in awe of the citizens of the 12/13 centuries who set out to build this huge extraordinary structure. Most of them would have been living in basic wattle and daub, earth-floored, one story homes. And there only a few thousand people living in the city at that time, what an amazing community!

The book by the way was ‘Mother Mary Comes For Me’ by Arundtati Roy. A stunning read, highly enjoyed and appreciated by all at the book club.

Oxford Ceramic Fair is just a few weeks away and Jenny is busy firing some final works.
Yesterday we opened the kiln after a bisque firing, the real interest of course being my own two new pieces on the far left - am branching out from Seabirds on Rocks to Owls on Tree Stumps.

Bristol Photography Book Fair (BOP26)
Is nearly upon us - opens this Saturday at 10am.
‘raft’ and I will be there waiting to say hello, chat and present our 2026 publications.

The highlight will be the launch of
‘The White Wood’ by Andrew Nadolski.
A remarkable B&W study of a dense river valley on the edge of Dartmoor. The book follows the descent down the steep slopes to reveal a hidden natural sepulchre at the bottom.
Exquisitely printed in tri-tone at Narayana Press in Denmark who print all ‘raft’ books.

Andrew will be on the stand all weekend and will be doing signing sessions on both days.

See you there, and as always many thanks to the wonderful folk at the Martin Parr Foundation who organise and run this brilliant affair!

Just arrived from Narayana in Denmark!
The very first copy of Andrew Nadoldki’s new book.
‘The White Wood’, photographed over ten years, descending a steep valley down to the River Dart.
Both a physical and allegorical descent to a hidden granite Tor.
It’s been such a privilege to share the journey of the making of this work with Andrew, and to now help bring it out into the world through ‘raftpress’, my publishing imprint.
As always brilliantly aided by Josie and Jess at RRBPhotobooks, and by my publishing guide and mentor Rudi.
Andrew and I will be at BOP 26 in October to launch the book but pre-orders are now being taken -

SOLD OUT!

WORKSHOP 2027: Landscape Stories with @jemsoutham - BOOKINGS NOW OPEN

Following on from the hugely successful Following the Red River workshop, Jem Southam returns to TONER for a new 3 day workshop in March 2027.

Landscape Stories opens up the relationship between photography, place and the stories that emerge when we spend time looking closely.

Led by renowned British photographer Jem Southam, this three-day workshop will look to guide you into a reactive and poetic form of landscape photography. Southam is known for his long form photographic projects, made over a number of years, with his focus returning to the same place or subject. We take a different turn with Jem to look into the ideas of reactive and a faster paced style of image making. A project such as Starlings, released by Southam’s new publishing company Raft @raftpress , was a photographic book, where the photographs were made in around 45 mins. This concept of creating a body of work in a short space of time is something that both Jem and Matt Martin of Toner feel is just as important as projects made over months or years.

The video features the following the Red River workshop which was the first in a series of workshops with Jem.

Now on display at RAMM: a recently-acquired selection of vintage images from four different photographic series by Jem Southam, made between 1996 and 2011.

Jem Southam began to document the countryside of the South West in the 1970s. Notable for technical excellence and lyrical quality, his work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the V&A, Tate St Ives and the Lowry.

Discover Jem's photography in Gallery 20 'Highlights from the Collection', from now until 17 Jan 2027. Another selection of prints from each of the
four series will replace them in displays lasting six months until early 2028.

Head to rammuseum.org.uk/whats-on to book tickets to an In Conversation with Jem on 26 Sep.
