I’ve been thinking much the last few weeks about life and death. Maybe it’s because of sudden news sweeping my inner circles: A best friend’s friend suddenly diagnosed with months to live, a spunky artist that led an intimate group retreat in Portugal I attended-suddenly gone at 49, another best friend’s mom lucky enough to have “caught it early”. My dear friend, Chris passing last year at age 46.

How can we understand death when, every year we get older we understand just a little more about life?

If we are lucky all of our love, all of our wisdom, all of our gifts will surpass this lifetime. Through our children, through our energies, through our creation.

This painting represents the fragility of both realms. Honors the dark and light & every possibility in between.

Maybe life and death aren’t so separate, after all. Maybe they dance alongside one another similar to a painting made whole by shadows and light.

Perhaps life begets death, death begets life.

My studio and my life are based in the Charleston Lowcountry, an area that goes hand in hand with the ideals of hospitality and tradition. One such tradition is a "surcee".

A seemingly made-up word, it carries so much warmth, love and connection, meaning "a small unexpected gift," or "a just because" gift.

No holiday or occasion, or grand reason other than just taking a moment to remember to say, "I thought of you, and I wanted you to know it."

This idea feels so close to my cultural roots, where, in Persian heritage, generosity and thoughtful gestures are woven into daily life. It connects to parts of me: my heritage and my present.

I made these cards to be little reminders of beauty, and emotion, and love. Just a little surcee, from one heart to another.

Art is more than color on the walls. It's more than decor that brings a room together.

Creating art with emotion is the only art I know how to make.

The painting featured here is "Soft Protection," and it's so much more than a mantlepiece.

It's a daily reminder of beauty.
Of the quiet comfort of being surrounded by home.
Of the warmth of a mother's arms that hold you when you're young and having a nightmare,
or when you're an adult and you're facing one.

But I like to think that protection doesn't have to be a shield.
It can be a reminder of a feeling,
a moment of encouragement,
and sometimes, it's simply softness.

The beauty of art is that every piece created, regardless of whether it's a new commission, designed with the help of a new client and friend, a recreation of something I've done before, or an attempt at bringing something I saw in a dream to life, is entirely unique.

Art is not something that can be purchased in bulk or re-ordered from a manufacturer. Each stroke of paint is placed with the vision, interpretation, and expression of what I was feeling in that moment. So two completed canvases - even those that are recreations of themselves – are impossible to replicate exactly or perfectly.
