Did you know this year the Australian Government announced a $792.9 million Women’s Health Budget?

My feed has been filled with celebratory posts from politicians & it sounds like a big win for women’s health right?!

here’s some numbers you need to be aware of...

Out of that entire $792.9 million package:
➡️ $159.9 million goes to contraception
➡️ $64.5 million to endometriosis, pelvic pain and menopause
➡️ $109.1 million to pharmacy trials for UTIs and contraceptives
➡️ $443.4 million to cheaper medicines
➡️ $16 million to maternity service upgrades in just two regions

How much do you think has been allocated to support the preventative care, awareness or recovery of pre & postnatal women?

Exactly $0.

No national investment in pelvic-floor screening, postpartum recovery, or preventative education to help mums prepare for birth & prevent birth trauma.

Yet…
‼️1in3 women experience pelvic-floor dysfunction
‼️Half of all women who’ve had a baby experience prolapse
‼️70% of women with leakage don’t seek help
‼️And perinatal depression and anxiety cost $877 million a year in lost productivity & care

On a bigger scale we are facing a National Health Crisis with 75% of the Australian population not meeting the recommended daily movement recommendations. Mums stop moving when they are not looked after.

❌No budget line labelled “pelvic health screening program”

❌No new program for prenatal care or postnatal care beyond maternity service grants or midwife supports.

❌No expansion in general antenatal or postnatal preventative or recovery education, checks or specific community-based exercise programs.

At MumSafe™, we’re on a mission to change that; to keep taking steps forward to ensure every mum has access to safe, effective exercise and pelvic-health support at every stage of motherhood - we ARE doing our bit and we WILL keep advocating for HER to have better care across the board.

It’s time to make pre & postpartum education & recovery part of the national women’s health conversation.

Perhaps we’ve spent too long treating the gaps in pregnancy and postpartum support like they’re someone else’s problem.

Exercise Professionals say they were never taught enough about working with mums in their initial qualification.

Mums say they were given little practical guidance about returning to exercise or about their postpartum body.

Pelvic health physiotherapists have patients who are afraid to return to their usual activities and they are afraid to send them to an exercise professional that they don’t know is educated.

GP’s and OB’s say the 6-week check-up was never meant to be a return to exercise assessment.

We have a problem with the pathway a mum takes postpartum - the education and the expectations we’ve created around it.

Every day, mums walk into gyms and classes looking for support so as an industry we can’t wait for a perfect system before we start doing better AND when we do it well we can have a huge impact on the way she experiences her life as a mother.

For us this means knowing how to ask better questions, continuing our education, developing local professional relationships and recognising that whilst we can’t do it all, we can do a lot.

We get to challenge the system that isn’t good enough for mums by raising our own standards and helping mothers to better understand their body and know how to ask for the help they need at every stage of their journey.

The good news is YOU get to lead the change by first making sure you understand asking the right questions about their pregnancy and birth experiences, pelvic floor health and any symptoms that could impact their exercise & then knowing what to do with the answers.

I thought I’d try sharing something new. It’s not polished, it’s a bit scary to post and it’s long 😂 grab a cuppa ☕️

It’s the BTS that usually I only share with a handful of people. It’s the thoughts, the doubts, the vision, the knowing and the not knowing of following my passion & I thought I’d bring you along for the ride a little.

What I know right now is that 2027 cannot look that same as 2026 and that my thoughts are growing by the day.

I’m excited 🎉 calm 🧘🏽‍♀️and a little apprehensive 🤔

If you stick around till the end (well done 🙌🏼) I invite your thoughts into the conversation ( I’m currently having with myself ☺️) by @jendugard

I believe every exercise professional that works with mums should have a sound general knowledge in working with pre and postnatal women.

And it’s important to note that if you are working with women you will be working with mums - even if they do not have little babies or young children any more.

In my next free masterclass we will explore what needs to be considered before directing mums into classes, personal training, impact exercise or strength training.

Supporting Mums in Your Fitness Business

is happening on Friday, 6 November at 1pm AEDT, for exercise professionals and is called Supporting Mums in Your Fitness Business.

If you’re working with women the likelihood is you are working with mums.

You don’t have to run mums and bubs classes or say you specialise in working with pre and postnatal mums to need to have a strong general knowledge in working with women who have birthed babies.

The more of us in the fitness industry that have a sound general knowledge in working with mums the better.

Then some of us will go deeper, some will have the knowledge they need for now and look after their clients safely and effectively and others might decide that this market isn’t for them but happily refer them on.

So - If you’re working with women, you’re working with mums. And you need to ask them the right questions about their pregnancy and birth experiences, pelvic floor health and any symptoms that could impact their exercise.

In my next free masterclass, we’ll explore what every exercise professional needs to understand about screening mums, why the six-week check isn’t the whole story, the signs and symptoms worth recognising, and the importance of knowing your scope and having the right referral pathways in place.

Comment SUPPORT and I’ll send you the registration link ❤️ by @jendugard

It’s can feel like the Wild West out there when navigating the ‘right’ return to exercise pace at the moment.

We’ve been told for years ‘wait until after the 6-week check-up’ before returning to the gym or structured exercise then lately the loudest voices are saying ‘early movement is better’ and for many this has been interpreted as ‘get back to the gym earlier or as soon as she can’.

Personally we have always encouraged early gentle, rebuild from the inside out, movement & exercise but in her home setting rather than in a formal exercise environment.

So then comes the question ‘How confident are you that you’re asking the right questions when a mum walks into your gym, class or studio?’ to ensure she gets the best and most effective can for where she is in her postpartum journey right now and in relation to her past experience and future goals for movement.

In my next FREE master we’ll explore what every exercise professional needs to understand about screening mums, why the six-week check isn’t the whole story, the signs and symptoms worth recognising and the importance of knowing your scope and having the right referral pathways in place.

It’s happening on Friday 6th November 2026, 1-2pm AEDT

P.S. You don’t need to be running a dedicated mums’ program to benefit from this education. If you work with women, understanding the impact pregnancy and birth may have on their exercise experience is important.
