Hexum Gallery is pleased to present 𝓦𝓪𝓵𝓵𝓯𝓵𝓸𝔀𝓮𝓻, a group exhibition featuring work by Matteo Callegari, Amie Cunat, Francesco Igory Deiana, Jack Kenna, Jenny Kemp, Danielle Mysliwiec, Elizabeth Powell, Erik Probst, JD Raenbeau, Kelli Thompson, and Velvet Other World.

The exhibition will be on view from August 28 through September 25, with an opening reception on Friday, August 28, from 4–8 pm.

Drawing from both the flower itself and the social idea of the wallflower, the exhibition brings together eleven artists responding to a shared invitation centered on identity and self portraiture, with the flower serving as inspiration.

Working in painting and drawing, each artist approaches the idea from a distinctly personal perspective. The responses move between abstraction and representation, drawing on floral imagery, pattern, and portraiture.

Polychrome brings together paintings by Jenny Kemp, Audrey Stone, and Deborah Zlotsky in a conversation about abstraction and geometric structure. Across three distinct practices, the artists use color as both architecture and sensation. Each artist arrives at abstraction through her own internal logic, producing paintings that explore abstraction as a form of concentration to examine the texture of experience: how attention intensifies and shifts, how time accumulates, how systems hold and slip.

Very pleased to be showing alongside Audrey Stone and Deborah Zlotsky in a three-person exhibition, Polychrome, which opens at Bernay Fine Art in Great Barrington on July 11. If you are able to attend, I would be delighted to see you! The reception will be held from 4–6 PM.

"In the paintings of Jenny Kemp, Audrey Stone, and Deborah Zlotsky, structure meets sensation through color. Color operates as both architecture and atmosphere, allowing the measurable to give way to the felt. The connective tissue is a shared insistence on the grid, the stripe, the parallel—geometry as a point of departure. Each artist arrives at abstraction through her own internal logic, and their works form a conversation about what painting can hold and what it does not need to resolve."

Morgan Lehman Gallery is pleased to present the fourth iteration of Twenty by Sixteen, a legacy exhibition originally conceived by curator emeritus Geoffrey Young. The exhibition features two works by more than 60 artists, each measuring exactly 20 × 16 inches. These precise dimensions allowed us to invite a diverse group of artists, extending beyond those typically featured in our exhibition program, and bring together a wide range of perspectives within a shared framework. Conceived as a spirited summer exhibition, Twenty by Sixteen also inaugurates Morgan Lehman’s expanded floor plan on the fourth floor of the West Chelsea building.

Buttons, thirty-five spiraling forms press against each other across the canvas — each one coiling inward toward a small blue center. Up close, no two are the same. The greens drift from warm chartreuse to cool aqua, and something quietly luminous builds toward the middle, as if the painting holds its own light.
A grid that stops being a grid. A pattern that becomes a field.
Kemp has three works in the exhibition — Buttons, Festoon, and Serpent Spun — and together they show the full range of what she does. Her paintings propose order and then complicate it, propose symmetry and then gently break it. They rhyme with the biological: cell walls, fingerprints, growth rings. They are their own order: sensuous, exact, and alive.

Walking into this show on a cold, blustery night, you are greeted by large windows illuminated out by gallery light. Inside, you are met with a collection of color, light, and energy. Each piece in the exhibition Spectral Evidence uses mainly acrylic to illuminate new spaces by dissolving edges, blending colors, and allowing gradients to calmly and smoothly envelope the space within the works. While each artist in the show has their own take on creating their own spaces, they use many conventions of painting and abstraction to create new forms and environments to experience, and each piece seems to flow well into the next. The gallery layout lends itself to a meandering space.

I’m thrilled to be included in this thoughtfully curated group show opening at @utopiaupstate in Kingston, NY this Saturday. Thank you @mandolyn_rosen for bringing together artists who address “near symmetry” in their work! Opening is from 4-7PM.

“UTOPIA presents A GNAWING THOUGHT, an exhibition which examines “near-symmetry” as a site of rebellion. The artists represented here have a love-hate relationship with visual symmetry and all the many implications it may hold, from the biological, the theatrical and the spiritual to the Classical and the authoritarian.

 The exhibition brings together works by 18 New York-based artists, most of whom reside in the Hudson Valley. Included works lean toward, flirt with and resist the coercive pull of symmetrical binaries and resolve instead into something close but not quite — retaining a kernel of imbalance, tension or mutation which gives them life.”
