The seasons are shifting here, and while I’ll never commit to a favorite at @sundanceresort, this summer was one for the books. That being said…I heard a rumor that this same ride, at sunset, with the fall leaves glowing is absolute magic and I believe it. I think the mountains are calling. ā€œI’ve been avoiding writing this post, but I’ve come to learn that the things that are hardest to write down are usually exactly the things that I need to write most. Maybe someday I’ll be ready to be more eloquent about it all, but today is not that day… ;).
Romy and Piper turned 9. How? It was hard to imagine carrying them both inside of me as tiny babies (and if you’ve been around for a while, you know I mean TINY), but it gets harder each year to believe that these beautiful, smart, kind, funny, TALL creatures came from my body. And because of that ā€œtinyā€ start they had, so many things have felt like a celebration more than I think they would have. We celebrated the first time they pooped, each piece of equipment they didn’t need anymore to breathe, each mL of a bottle they drank on their own, and then finally the first time we got to hold them on our couch at home (writing that just made me cry, it was the best feeling in the world after months in the vinyl hospital chairs). And once we got home, everything felt worth celebrating. So when it came time for their first birthday, we had SO much to celebrate and threw a BIG party - family came to town, we invited all of our friends, our nurses from the hospital were there (crying again!) and what maybe in the past would have seemed to me to be silly - throwing a huge party for babies who’d have no memory of it - felt like the most special, important thing we could do. And I’ve just never known any other way to do it, the big parties have continued each year, and each year I’m more grateful for the way it comes together, the people who show up, and obviously, more than anything, the not-so-little girls we are all celebrating….
….And they were ending the night feeling like mistakes when they are absolute MIRACLES, beyond anything I ever thought could exist for me. And we started these parties to remember and celebrate that. The fact that this party left us all feeling so depleted and opposite from that was hardā€¦ā€

A June weekend in the city to celebrate @lisarhawkins 🄹 It was all magic, but thanks to @buffybirrittella for our favorite dinner ✨
I can’t believe it was a June almost 20 years ago that I moved here - so much has changed and so much has stayed the same, and I’m grateful for both.
(When I was finding photos for this post, Nada Surf kept playing in my head and I think it’s because back then I spent a lot of time on the subway with them in my headphones. But also, they became a band in New York the same year Lisa was born, so that feels fittingšŸ˜‰) taken in The Polo Bar - A Ralph Lauren Restaurant by @jenkhawkins

My hair is one of the things I get asked about most, and of all the things I could share here, it would all start with @biancacolour. I asked her years ago to keep me cool, thank God she’s still trying šŸ˜‚(Yes, you can get on her books, and it’s so so worth the wait.) taken in Andy Lecompte Salon by @jenkhawkins

You know that hosting (well, maybe not as much hosting but filling my home with people I love and then holding them hostage for as long as possible) is one of my very favorite things, but I haven’t had the capacity to do it lately. However, when I heard there was a second Practical Magic coming out, I wanted to somehow have a girls’ night to rewatch the first. I was surprised how many of my friends hadn’t seen it, and I’ve also been surprised to hear in recent press tours that the first movie actually wasn’t a hit right away, because to me it was 🤩. I remember watching it as a 12 year old little girl and falling instantly in love, it’s been so special to me and my sisters ever since. Anyways, as the release date of the second movie approached AND I saw a full moon was coming, I decided to send out some texts inviting whoever wanted to make the time and the drive. I really wasn’t planning to do much other than watch the movie and maybe set some intentions under the full moon, but these women created mood boards and recipes and sign up sheets, and then they showed up with decorations and food and trinkets and filled my home with chatter and good smells and love. When I think about the movie it really was perfect - I like to think now that the text I sent out was my version of the phone tree in the movie, these women coming my version of us forming a circle around each other with broomsticks (spoiler alert if you haven’t seen the first movie). As I said to them that night, the story really is about women saving each other. They aren’t ultimately saved by a man, but by sisters, aunts, daughters, friends, and a community of women who show up when they’re needed. I feel so lucky to have my sisters, my grandmas, my mom, my aunts, to have my daughters and witness their beyond beautiful, unique version of sisterhood, and the women who make up the friends and community that have helped me heal and call me home to myself, again and again.
And of course, there was lavender, rosemary, salt, midnight margaritas, and chocolate cake for breakfast (and even a random beetle running across the floor at one point, I can’t make this stuff up…)

Back to School looked different for us this year, and for a moment I felt so much mom guilt, but then I remembered this quote I love, that says ā€œLife should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming ā€œWow! What a Ride!ā€ā€ That’s Hunter S. Thompson and I don’t think he had back to school in mind, but this is definitely how we showed up at the first day of school this year, after the best weekend of our lives to close out a summer we lived HARD. We rolled in at 3am the night before (or the morning of?) after spending every last second we could sitting in the Seattle sun hugging and kissing our family, an insane 2 hr rental car shuttle situation, a missed flight, a very delayed flight we rebooked on, and a long trek to our parked car in San Diego and drive home. I dragged them out of bed a few hours later, wearing the same sweats they wore in the airport the night before (which I somehow managed to wash in those few hours cause, ew). Oh, and after a tooth was lost in the airport and not even properly placed under the pillow, the tooth-fairy still found us, which I’m personally pretty amazed by. They didn’t have new backpacks, shoes, or even school clothes unless you count the oversized $14 clearance SEATTLE sweatshirt Romy had to have at the airport, and I definitely didn’t get a photo before we trudged up the schools stairs a few minutes after the bell. But these are the photos I got of the 24 hours surrounding ā€œback to schoolā€, and they mean more than any front porch photo with a chalk sign I could have taken.

We are tired, and it’s not perfect and definitely not the way I imagined it all, but we are ALIVE and experiencing life together in the most beautiful way.

Now, please excuse me while I try to fill you in on our summer over the next week or so…and I can’t even wrap my head around this past weekend but I hope you’ll hear about that soon, too… taken in Seattle-Tacoma International Airport by @jenkhawkins

At the end of June, two of my little sister’s best friends hosted the perfect bridal shower for her in the West Village. Everything about it was so idyllic - the setting on Cornelia Street, the people (the guests and the staff), the wine, even the cute games we played proving how much we love and know Lisa and Jack, and learning a few things we didn’t. As a finishing touch, everybody got to take home a beautiful candle from one of my favorite brands - @rewined. For this day, we picked Rose because it fit so well. They come in these beautiful coupe glasses that added to the beautiful table settings/decor, but I love thinking of people taking them home and remembering such a sweet day every time they smell it or burn it. Whenever I walk by mine, the scent makes me so happy - it really does smell so good.

(They also have scents for other wines, cocktail, barista, and farmers market collections - would be so cute to gift to a friend in their favorite drink. Leave a comment for a link to see all the fun options) taken in Palma by @jenkhawkins

I’m a lot.

I laugh and cry, a lot, sometimes at the same time. Always have šŸ˜‚šŸ˜…šŸ˜.

Last night I drove the girls around where I used to live on when I first moved to California. Romy put a flower in my hair and I was feeling myself. But I didn’t realize these streets would remember me, or how much I needed them to. I don’t know why it has taken me so long to come back here with the girls, maybe I wasn’t ready until now. I think the memories of who I was back then combined with who I’ve managed to become was something I needed to see, and it felt good showing her off to my girls ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹ taken in Corona del Mar, Newport Beach, California by @jenkhawkins
