Take a glimpse into the incredible things happening at @jenksms during Dr. Butterfield’s site visit this morning!

We started in Ms. Kaufmann’s Intro to Stage Makeup & Costume class, where students were learning to sew buttons and use sewing machines. From there, we joined Mr. Ratliff’s science class outdoors to explore plant and animal reproduction and the conditions needed for growth. Along the way, we even spotted tiny wild strawberries beginning to grow!

Next, we visited Mr. Blakley’s social studies class in the library, where students were playing a silent UNO game designed to simulate cultural differences and communication barriers. We wrapped up in Mr. Brown’s Vocal Music class with a sneak peek of the 8th grade musical, Shrek Jr.

Before heading out, we also admired student-designed bookmarks that will soon be available for students to pick up when checking out library books.

Thank you, JMS, for welcoming us into your classrooms and sharing all the incredible things happening across your site! by @jenksps

“She saved my life. She is my hero.”

Dennis Adams was leaving a JTA football game at Allan Trimble Stadium when he fainted and hit his head on the curb. The impact severed an artery, and blood began pouring out of a large cut on the back of his skull. Thankfully for Dennis, a hero happened to be close by.

Chelsea Franklin, school nurse at @jenkswe, ran to Dennis’ side and immediately applied and held pressure on the wound. She made sure 911 was called and stayed with Dennis to slow the loss of blood until paramedics arrived and transported him to the hospital.

Doctors stitched together the artery and put staples in his scalp to close the laceration. Before he was even released from the hospital three days later, Dennis, a Jenks grad (Class of 1970), was already thinking about Chelsea and making sure everyone knew how grateful he was for her life-saving actions.

“She went above and beyond what she was required to do, and it means the world to me that somebody would stop and attend to a stranger the way she did. She stayed calm, she kept my family updated, and I may not be here today if it wasn’t for her.”

This morning, Dennis and his daughters arrived at West Elementary to surprise Chelsea as she was presented with the Jenks Public Schools “Excellence in Safety” Award. They had spoken briefly on the phone when Dennis was in the hospital, but today, they were able to share tearful hugs as Dennis expressed his gratitude in person.

“I think as a nurse, your training just kicks in when you see a need like that. I didn’t really think. I started doing what I needed to do for him, and I’m just so happy I could help. I know it could have turned out differently, but I’m glad I was in the right place at the right time. It’s so special to see him today, and I hope he has many more years in front of him.”

Chelsea was acting on her calling to take care of people, no matter the age or circumstance. For Dennis, her extraordinary act of kindness was a priceless gift he will never forget.

It was confirmed at the Back to School Rally in early September. Jenks Public Schools is the Home of Heroes. To help carry the theme forward throughout the school year and to give our employees the recognition they deserve, we’ll feature “Heroes of the Month” on our social media. Whether it is big gestures of kindness and support or small interactions to show how much they care, JPS staff members are making a difference. It’s not only what they do, it’s who they are.

If you would like to nominate a staff member to be selected as one of the “Heroes of the Month,” please fill out this online form and tell us why they are worthy of the title.

Here are the October Heroes of the Month! These Trojans are being recognized with real stories and quotes of appreciation from parents. photo of cami gregory and stephanie shrack together outside west intermediate. text on the photo says Cami Gregory, Stephanie Schrack, and Amanda Cheatwood at Jenks West Intermediate "Mrs. Gregory and the staff at JWI are so kind and helpful, and they do not hesitate to answer questions. Mrs. Gregory ensures that students with moderate behavior and academic needs for reading and math are included in gen ed every day for science and social studies. The gen ed teacher, Mrs. Schrack, has so many inclusive things in her room and welcomed my child kindly at Meet the Teacher. I can tell Mrs. Cheatwood is great, too, because my son is loving science this year! There is not a more supportive or inclusive building than JWI. The building is leading the way on how to include our students on IEPs." Not pictured amanda cheatwood by @jenksps
