We’re delighted to share that Museum @defundatie has acquired two paintings by @jenliu3 for its permanent collection. Both works are on view in the museum’s collection presentation through 20 September 2026.

From the press release: “New York–based Jen Liu brings an international and interdisciplinary perspective to the collection. Her two acquired works — Back of Head: Tunnel of Love and Zao Nainai’s Snacktime (both 2025) — belong to a research-driven painting practice in which she connects national identity and archival material to distinctive materials, from handmade acrylic paint to traces of electronic waste.”

New York-based artist @jenliu3 works across diasporic Asian identities, postcolonial economies and the invisible labour that sustains contemporary technoscientific life. her research-heavy works often involve collaboration across distant disciplines, from microbiology to computer programming, to probe themes of labour, disappearance, and the female body across temporalities.

@rguzmanserrano speaks with Liu and reflects on a body of work concerned with the conditions under which certain lives become unrepresentable.
The conversation follows Liu’s 2022 Backslash fellowship, supported by @cornell_tech, and her 2018 Art + Technology grant from LACMA.

Watch the exhibition video: Jen Liu, Pound of Flesh. Final week at Silverlens New York.

Jen Liu reveals a striking parallel between 19th-century Chinese migrant women forced into scripted identities and contemporary AI microworkers operating in enforced anonymity. By animating these erased histories and hidden labors, she questions the ethics of representing bodies systematically engineered to remain invisible within the global economy.

On view through 2 May.

Thanks @safflower_lady and @artreview_magazine for the smart, thoughtful words upon the occasion of my show at @silverlensgallery ! Pleasantly surprised by the connection to the @joshklinejoshkline article that’s been hitting NYC hard, but yes, it’s all about the socioeconomic decomposition of NYC, this rotting chunk of meat on the sinking ship of capitalism. That’s a wrap! I love(d) this show that just closed yesterday, thank you Upstream Gallery Amsterdam @upstreamgallery for being a wonderful partner for these last 23 years, for this artist who has certainly had her ups and downs! 10 paintings (much bigger than they look here!) and a new WIP video, TIME TRAVELER IN D-BLOCK, 2026 - a large roomful of the backs of women’s heads, in fantastical buns and Mercury drops, next to a projection room where a micro-worker passes out at her bedroom work station again and again, falling into a loop of history and soap opera fantasy while melting into a collective pool of toxic mercury again and again. Script composed of interview transcripts of Chinese women arriving in the port of San Francisco in the 19th century, interviews with today’s micro-workers, and mystical texts from ancient female alchemists on the transformative power of Mercury. Oh, and show’s name was Glorious Substances, Beautiful Settings, a quote by Marc Andreessen about his prognosis re: the coming “reality privilege” of the .0001%, if you don’t know please look it up, it’s a simple reminder that AI will always be about controlling poor folk, a straight shot from the mouth of an oligarch 🪙🪙🪙 taken in Amsterdam, Netherlands by @jenliu3

NEW YORK: Jen Liu: Pound of Flesh, now on view.

Jen Liu excavates a haunting parallel: the invisible labor sustaining our digital present finds its mirror in the erased histories of Chinese migrant women who entered the United States between 1850 and 1899.

Liu researches immigration case files from the Port of San Francisco, each containing the same fabricated story—women coached with scripted accounts of being born in San Francisco, visiting China, and now coming home. Their ability to enter and stay in the country depended on their invisibility. Here, Liu paints portraits that refuse us the face. Instead, we encounter the backs of women’s heads.
Contemporary microworkers—the unseen humans training AI—operate under similar conditions of enforced anonymity. Liu surveys these workers, then feeds this data into an animation that displays a body reduced to its single extractable function.

Both exist within economies that demand their labor while engineering their disappearance. These portraits ask: what does it mean to depict someone who was never meant to be seen?

Words by Wassan Al-Khudhairi

Pound of Flesh runs from 5 March to 2 May 2026.

OPENING TONIGHT, SILVERLENS NYC, Thursday March 5, 6-8pm: POUND OF FLESH.
I’m so excited + grateful for this small solo show, new paintings on paper and an (almost) real time 3D animation that digests daily survey results of micro-workers (AI data workers) describing their work conditions. This is a side chapter to a larger body of work, that in the words of Wassan Al-Khudhairi, presents “a haunting parallel: the invisible labor sustaining our digital present [that] finds its mirror in the erased histories of Chinese migrant women who entered the United States between 1850 and 1899.” They are drawn together by the fluidity of mercury, diasporic/network estrangement and the platform exploitation of bodies paid for by the cent - a moment for the breathing bodies that build our AI-ified world, to speak back. So many people to thank, that post to come soon. But for now, really hope to see you tonight, deep breaths and a few glasses of wine, show is up till May 2 @silverlensgallery 505 W 24th St, NYC 10011 🥩🥩🥩 taken in Chelsea, Manhattan by @jenliu3

KIRIK websitesi bir hafta boyunca THE LAND AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA filminin kendi sayfasını misafir ediyor:

---------

For one week, KIRIK's website will be taken over by THE LAND AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA:

What happens if you are liquidated –financially, socially, politically, environmentally? Under what conditions is it possible to survive?

Addressing the forced disappearance of female workers in China by the government for their activism in the name of labor rights, democracy or public transparency, Liu’s film combines the workers' first-hand accounts and poems with other archival sources.

The film also holds a secret within it. Its digital body contains the archives of the forcibly disappeared female workers, transcripts of tens of thousands of vlogs, screenshots of social media posts and family photographs.

You can unpack these archives by following the instructions on the film’s page. by @jenliu3
