POSTS STORIES REELS

To say that the last few months have been a whirlwind is an understatement. I am so lucky and honored to work on shows where music plays such a huge part & has made such an impact. So grateful for my team @trueneek @whitneyapilzer @chipchapp @hahagigggles & everyone who works so hard to make these shows and tell these stories - from showrunners like Sam to editors to producers to everyone on set. The biggest risk you can take is not taking the risk at all.

Jen Malone was living in Boston and feeling completely burnt out after a 10 year career as a music publicist. One day after watching Iron Man, she noticed the credit for “music supervisor.” She decided on the spot that was the job she wanted.

So she bet on herself, packed up her car, moved to LA, and started at the bottom of the ladder as a “not-college-age intern." She spent as much time networking as she could, and tried to outwork everyone around her. There was no safety net.

Safe to say her bet paid off, as her résumé now includes a ridiculous slate of my favorite shows:
🎬 Beef
🎬 Euphoria
🎬 Wednesday
🎬 The Penguin
🎬 Love Story
🎬 Atlanta
🎬 Yellowjackets
🎬 John Wick: Chapter 4
🏆 Oh 4-Emmy Nominations too..

Her advice to anyone early in their career:
"Hustle and know that nothing's gonna be handed to you. Always take the meeting, be resourceful and take initiative."

Any for anyone looking to pivot:
"Be willing to start at the bottom, and stay focused. Keep your eye on the prize."

“Music supervisors are one of the very few departments that are on from pre-production all the way to the last delivery of the last episode.” — Jen Malone, music supervisor and founder of Black and White Music.

In this interview, Malone tells @wordsbykristin about how music supervisors piece together the perfect soundtrack for a film or TV production, and why she feels it’s such a unique role in Hollywood.

Last Saturday, I had the honor of speaking with @jenmalone666, a four-time Emmy-nominated Music Supervisor whose work continues to shape the sound of modern storytelling. Our conversation explored her career path, the challenges she faced early on, and the reality that there was never a clear or traditional route into music supervision. Jen shared how she pushed forward with determination, put herself out there, and figured things out through persistence and instinct. She spoke openly about trusting her vision, collaborating with directors and artists, and building a body of work that reflects her courage and curiosity.
