How do you commemorate the loss of a loved one?

For us, it was our dog, Zelda—the beating heart of our home. She watched me grow from a single girl, to a wife, to a daughter grieving the loss of my own mother, and finally to a mother myself. Through every chapter, she was there, tail wagging.

Her loss still brings my children to tears and my heart to ache. But love like that never disappears. It simply changes form.

There are endless ways to honor someone you’ve loved. For me, it began with a pink flowering dogwood tree. Last spring, my children and I planted it in our yard. It’s Zelda’s tree. This summer, when it bloomed for the first time, I scattered her ashes beneath its branches.

Around the same time, my dear friend @jenna__katz helped me create a forever keepsake.

Together we designed a hand-sculpted blossom, each of its five heart-shaped petals representing our family. At its center sits a pink sapphire I’d treasured for years, always waiting for the right moment to set. Inside the pendant, we placed Zelda’s ashes before it was carefully soldered closed, with her name hand engraved on the back.

I wear it every day. I never take it off.

One day, I hope to pass it on to my daughter, so she can share Zelda’s story with her own children. That’s the beauty of collecting meaningful treasures over time. Jewelry becomes more than something beautiful—it becomes a vessel for memory, love, and legacy.

Today, our two happy pups, Winnie & Honey, romp around Zelda’s tree, and beside it stands another tree planted for my mother, Joanne. A quiet reminder that while life asks us to say goodbye, it also gives us beautiful ways to remember.

To plant them. To wear them close. To set them in stone.
