bareroots A multi-medium exhibition showcasing the Legacy of Notting Hill Carnival through a collection of interpretations, video/ film, photography, sound, archival materials, sculpture, costume and more!
Entry to the exhibition and activations is FREE (Tickets required via Somerset House website @somersethouse or our bio).
The Notting Hill Carnival is not just a festival. It is history, resistance, art, politics and joy compressed into two days. For decades, it has reminded us that Britain is no longer a monoculture and that equality is not achieved in courtrooms or parliament alone, but in the streets where people dance, eat, and live together!
Thursday 13th Aug to Friday 21st Aug
10am - 6pm (Sun - Wed)
12pm - 8pm (Thu - Fri)
10am - 8pm (Sat)
However, the exhibition will close at 2pm on the 21st!

This Legacy of Notting Hill Carnival project has been made possible with support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to celebrate and showcase the significance of this remarkable cultural phenomenon - one that has too often been misunderstood and unfairly stigmatised.

Dedicated to (Yinka) @talayriley rip who recently passed, I was shocked and saddened about the news.. we had spoken recently and due to meet up…I had the privilege of capturing Talay who was a joy to photograph, great memories of the shoot. I had wanted to include grillz and how it had been adopted by the mainstream culture once again since the 90’s (to illustrate the influence of one generation to another) in my forthcoming exhibition at Somersethouse at the time. Talay had the look I envisioned. We spoke and then met with DJ 279 who loaned his vintage 80’s ghetto blaster and I did the shots in brixton skatepark. Celebrate his life and musical legacy a grammy award winning songwriter. Sending my condolences to his family, friends (Nina at @londongrillz so sorry …and loved ones and the uk grime scene generation which was his musical foundation x #talayriley rip #music #photography #rnb #grime by @jenniebaptiste
