Is it just me or is "just forget about it" the least helpful thing anyone can say?.....

It's really hard to move on when your body is still reacting.

Whether the rejection is real or perceived it can still feel like a physical reaction in your body. Your heart beats faster, your chest get tighter, your stomach flips. These can be very real experiences multiple times a day for someone experiencing RSD.

Send this to someone who needs to understand it 🧡 by @jenniewatson.ie

I studied Psychology for eight years..... and I still didn’t recognise it in myself.

When I first saw women talking about ADHD online, I honestly thought it was ridiculous. I was ticking practically every box, and still telling myself “I’m sure everyone does that.” Then I got assessed. And sure enough.... I had ADHD.

But there’s another reason I came back online this summer.

A few months ago I came across a post about St Kevin’s in Cork, and the comments underneath were full of stories about mothers, grandmothers and aunts who had been sent there years ago.

I’m not suggesting all of those women had ADHD. We simply don’t know their circumstances. But it made me SO angry thinking about how many women have been misdiagnosed, dismissed, or treated as though something was fundamentally wrong with them.

Decades later, there are still women going through life thinking they’re lazy, too sensitive, disorganised, or just not trying hard enough. When some of them have ADHD and don’t know it. And even when they do know, they don’t always know there are things that can make life easier.

No woman should spend her life believing she’s failing at being a functioning adult, when what she might actually need is a better understanding of how her brain works. 🧡

If this helps even one woman recognise something in herself, it’s worth talking about.

Send it to someone who needs to hear it.

Have you ever bought the planner, made the colour-coded routine and decided THIS Monday is the one? 📒

That’s one of the biggest mistakes I see with ADHD. Building your life around the person you wish you were, instead of the person you actually are.

Because every time you set up a system that’s completely unrealistic for your brain and then can’t keep it going, you collect more evidence that you can’t trust yourself.

So flip it. Instead of asking “how can I make myself do this every day?”, ask “how can I make this easier on the kind of day when I really don’t feel like doing it?”

The goal isn’t perfect consistency. It’s a life you can keep coming back to without guilt and without shame. Missing a day isn’t what derails you. Deciding that missing a day means you failed is. 🧡

What’s one thing you could make easier this week? Tell me in the comments.

Did getting your ADHD diagnosis feel like the light bulb moment you thought it would be? 💡

For me it was..... in some ways. Suddenly so many things made sense. Things I’d spent YEARS thinking were just me.

But getting diagnosed and actually understanding your own brain are two very different things.

Because ADHD doesn’t look the same in everybody. You can read every symptom list online and still not know:

- why you shut down with certain tasks
- why you can work for hours on something you love, but can’t answer a two-line email
- why you’re so capable in one place and completely overwhelmed in another
- what you’ve spent years calling a character flaw that might have a different explanation

That’s the shift I’ve made. I’m less interested in collecting symptoms, and much more interested in the person underneath them.

Your patterns, your strengths, your triggers, your environment, and the things that regulate you.

Because understanding yourself is useful. But using that understanding to build a better life? That’s where it gets really interesting. 🧡

Which of those questions hit home for you? Tell me in the comments.

I think ADHD is often made out to be more complicated than it needs to be. We spend so much time looking for "hacks" and systems and ways to be more productive and ways to be on time.... Etc, etc, etc. You get the gist.....

If we spent a lot more time concentrating on the basics like proper sleep, good nutrition, nervous system regulation, exercise and fresh air we could be in a much better position and may not need as many hacks.

I'm not saying that sleep, food and exercise are the cure for ADHD. They aren't. There is no cure. It's a neurotype, not an illness.

But, there is certainly A LOT of empirical
evidence to back up the basics of sleep, nutrition and physical movement being very beneficial for ADHD brains.

So, before you go looking for your next hack or life changing system to improve your ADHD symptoms, make sure you have the basics down first and the results might just surprise you 🧡 by @jenniewatson.ie

This is the psychology that has fascinated me since long before I knew it had a name.

I’ve always been obsessed with why some people seem to think “why not me?” while others automatically think “I could never do that.”

Because that belief matters....If no one ever believed in themselves no one would ever try!

Not because believing in yourself magically guarantees success cause it absolutely doesn’t.

But believing that you could figure something out changes what you’re willing to attempt in the first place and I think this becomes particularly interesting with ADHD.

After years of inconsistency, unfinished plans, criticism, comparison or wondering why things seem easier for everyone else, it’s very easy to build a story about what you’re not capable of.

⚠️ But a story isn’t necessarily a fact....and sometimes the first step towards doing more with your life is simply questioning the conclusions you’ve already made about yourself.

So I’m going to be talking a LOT more about self-efficacy, motivation, behaviour and the psychology of actually becoming the person you know you could be. Cause I've spoken to a lot of you here and I know you have SO much potential 👀

What would you attempt if you genuinely believed you could figure it out? 🧡 by @jenniewatson.ie

Leaving this here as a reminder to myself 🫠

Consistency is NOT my strong point but I'm learning to not be so hard on myself about it and accept that some days are easier and more productive than others.

Returning again and again is the goal for now. 🔁
