A mini studio tour 🤩
Here I am with some of my larger pieces in various stages of development. (Some for sale on my website, some works in progress)

Also several collages from my 100 Day Project. I just can’t take them down yet. They bring joy.

My studio is almost always a mess. It is mostly for art, but is also part coat closet, part storage closet for teaching elementary art, part junk room.

Also my husband tells me I have a problem leaving half eaten bananas around the house. (Do you spy it on the table in the last picture? 🍌)

How do you know when a painting is done? I would love to hear your thoughts and ways of “knowing”. I keep messing with this one here and there… probably just because it’s hanging on the wall. I really love the wildflowers which I added a few weeks ago.

Afternoon art session in the almost autumn sunshine. In the Pacific Northwest where I live, these are magical and fleeting days. Soon the rain sets in and outside art making becomes impossible. Today I just wanted to play and explore materials and draw the shadows that this tree branch I picked the other day on a walk made on the paper. It honestly turned out to be sorta a big mess but I guess that was the point. The sunshine was amazing.

Intuitive play in my sketchbook. Tracing shadows, playing with materials, letting go of perfection. I did this last Friday during @juliehamiltoncreative free workshop and it was so much fun. I signed up for her course The Wild Art of Noticing. Just getting started on it today and I couldn’t be more excited. If you’ve followed me for awhile you know I really struggle with overthinking everything. My inner critic is very loud (enneagram one!) and have a lot of self doubt! So I’m so excited about digging into this course and letting my curiosity and subconscious lead the way. 🎨

I have been working on this one off and on since January. It’s gone through many iterations and various layers of paint have been added over the months. Yesterday, I decided I needed to add some flowers. It was feeling too green and boring. I’m always walking around my neighborhood taking photos of fields and flowers so this one is inspired by these daily walks. Really liking it now! This will make its debut this weekend at the Camas Vintage and Art Faire. Come see me on Birch St on Saturday, from 9 to 3 PM.

Kids are back in school which means I’m happily working again in my studio. Enjoying uninterrupted time to get into flow state. This morning so far:

- sketches for a HUGE 4x5 foot commission

- color mixing exercises from @scottgellatly Color Theory class I took a few months back (the course that keeps on giving - highly recommend!)

- playing with mini cut up compositions that I will use to make original art cards (these will be available this weekend at the Camas Vintage and Art Faire where I’ll have a booth)

- watching the dappled sunlight make striped patterns in an abstract botanical

- prepping some paintings that will be available at the Camas Art Fair which is this Saturday! 9-3 pm in downtown Camas. @ilovedowntowncamas

Abstracted tide pools. These two pieces will be part of the Cannon Beach Gallery September show: Natural Beach Objects. So honored to have my art selected to be a part of this exhibit! I have always loved the Oregon coast tide pools and they are a favorite subject of mine.

Painting some tide pools today… thinking a lot about the brevity of life and how each day is a gift.

One of my all time favorite singer songwriters died in a motorcycle crash last Wednesday. Glen Hansard, @glenhansard lead singer of the Irish band The Frames… My first response was “no, no, no, no, no”. I just cannot believe it.
It seems so cliche to say that his music meant a lot to me over the years. But it really really did. My first born was actually born to The Frames song Fiztcarraldo. (A song based on a movie directed by Werner Herzog about a guy attempting to push a steamship over a mountain in the Amazon - which is very much like giving birth for the first time). Glen Hansard’s authenticity and storytelling and presence when he performed was like no other artist I’ve experienced. I don’t really have words… When he and @marketa_irglova won the Oscar for their song Falling Slowly in the film Once, he ended their acceptance speech with this declaration: “Make art, make art.”
He left us with this legacy - not just all the amazing music - but with this deep and humble commitment to making art. I’m so thankful to have had his music be a soundtrack to many parts of my life.

And to all of us still here on this earth- keep going, keep creating, keep being a blessing to others with whatever gifts God has given you to share with the world.

It’s been a full and lovely summer so far. Lots of travel and family time. Not as much time for art. But I wanted to get back into the studio today. At least for the morning. Nothing productive. Nothing planned. Just play. But then I got stuck in my head about wasting my time, making something ugly etc etc. So I flipped the switch and just decided to lean into that fear. Make something ugly on purpose. I used my Sketchsquares (highly recommend this template by @faye_bridgwater ) and made something with clashing colors and colors I normally stay away from. Just doodled in the squares and didn’t care. It got me into the creative flow and out of my head.

Would love to hear how you warm up with your art or get unstuck (with anything!).

Quick sketch in the middle of a giant mess on my studio table. Just needed to paint. With watercolor. I love this medium. Watching it flow and the unexpected surprises along the way. I also love tide pools - such a lovely subject that lends so nicely to abstraction.

Okay so the glass glare is pretty bad but here is my art in the front window of Gallery 408. Grateful for this gallery and the way the owners promote and support local artists 💛

They’re hung up! My first diptych ever, a commission, is framed and hung! It’s a pretty fun feeling 🤩

I love how those gold frames really bring out the bling too!
