Federal Court Orders Reinstatement of the 2027 Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery. 🇺🇲

In a significant legal development for global immigration, a California federal court has stepped in to save the delayed Green Card Lottery.

On October 14, 2026, U.S. District Judge Jinsook Ohta in San Diego issued a preliminary injunction in the matter of Red Eagle Law, L.C. v. Rubio, officially ordering the U.S. Department of State to reinstate and open the Fiscal Year 2027 Diversity Immigrant Visa Program.

Key Court-Ordered Deadlines:
▪︎ October 29, 2026: Deadline for the State Department to publicly announce the official registration schedule and criteria.

▪︎ November 1, 2026: The application window must officially open for a mandatory 30-day electronic entry period.

▪︎ December 3, 2026: The deadline by which the government must notify selected applicants.

The program remains legally mandated to issue up to 55,000 permanent residency visas (Green Cards) to qualified applicants from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States.

Registration for the lottery is strictly FREE. The government does not charge an entry fee, nor does it ever send email notifications to selectees. Entries must be submitted directly and exclusively via the official U.S. Department of State DV Program Portal.

Can a society truly claim to treat everyone equally if its rules leave no room for cultural differences?

Have you ever met someone and decided you knew exactly what kind of person they were, only to realise later that you had got them completely wrong?

It happens more often than we like to admit. Too often, we judge people by one conversation, a first impression or something we heard about them from someone else. Before we know it, we have formed an opinion and started treating it as fact.

We have all been on one side of this at some point. Perhaps we mistook someone’s quietness for pride, their confidence for arrogance, or their decision to keep their distance for an act of hostility. We rarely stop to consider that there might be more to the story.

This is not to say that we should excuse bad behaviour or ignore the things that concern us. But there is a difference between paying attention to what someone does and assuming we know why they do it.

I think we would save ourselves a lot of unnecessary misunderstandings if we learned to pause before passing judgment. Not every first impression is accurate, and not every story we hear tells the whole truth.

Disagreement should not have to come at the expense of respect.

True leadership requires the humility to listen, the maturity to reconsider our assumptions, and the wisdom to challenge another person’s views without diminishing their worth.

We may not always agree, but we can choose to disagree with grace, fairness and respect.

How we treat people when we disagree with them says a great deal about our character.

I took a little time to enjoy the outdoors today, and my thoughts somehow wandered to leadership and how we respond when people disagree with us.

I think you can tell a lot about a person by how they lead or react, especially when things don’t go their way.

It is easy to speak about integrity, fairness and respect when everyone shares the same opinion. The real test comes when our views are challenged, our decisions questioned, or our judgment differs from that of someone around us.

Can we listen without becoming defensive? Can we reconsider an assumption without feeling diminished? Can we disagree with someone without questioning their competence, motives or worth?

How we handle these moments says a great deal about our judgment, our character and the kind of environment we create for the people around us.

Authority may command attention, but it is the manner in which it is exercised that earns lasting respect.

What do you consider the most important quality of a good leader, especially when faced with disagreement?

My commute this morning got me thinking about the role experience plays in shaping judgment, particularly in leadership.

Leadership is measured not merely by knowledge or position, but by the quality of one's judgment and the principles that guide one's decisions.

Effective leadership requires the discipline to observe carefully, communicate deliberately, and act on principle rather than impulse. It also calls for the humility to question one's own assumptions, the consistency to uphold one's values, and the maturity to recognise that earning universal approval is neither a realistic expectation nor a necessary measure of good leadership.

One of the greatest tests of leadership is the ability to remain composed when circumstances become challenging. Exercising sound judgment is relatively easy when conditions are favourable. The real test lies in how leaders navigate disagreement, uncertainty and competing perspectives without compromising fairness or allowing personal sentiment to override principle.

Ultimately, character is revealed not merely by what leaders profess, but by the consistency with which they put their values into practice.

On this Thanksgiving Day, I wish all Canadians and everyone who calls Canada home a peaceful and joyful celebration. 🇨🇦

Thanksgiving invites us to reflect not only on what we are grateful for, but also on the kind of society we aspire to build. A society grounded in compassion, strengthened by diversity, guided by mutual respect, and united by a shared commitment to the common good.

Our strength as a nation lies not only in our achievements, but in how we treat one another; how we support those in need, honour the contributions of our communities, and create opportunities for the next generation. These are the values that sustain our democracy, deepen our sense of belonging, and give meaning to our shared aspirations.

As we gather with family and friends, may we remember that gratitude is most powerful when it inspires generosity, that unity is strongest when it embraces our differences, and that a better future is built through the collective efforts of us all.

May this Thanksgiving bring peace to our homes, joy to our families, and renewed faith in the promise of tomorrow.

Wishing you and your loved ones a happy, peaceful, and blessed Thanksgiving. 🍁

In 2020, Tennessee’s Attorney General asked the Tennessee Supreme Court to set a date for Christa Pike’s execution. But Pike’s lawyers fought it.

They sought more time, opposed the execution date and, in 2021, asked for a certificate of commutation, arguing that her mental health should be considered.

The motion was denied.

Then, after Pike had exhausted her appeals, another legal development gave her lawyers a new opening.

In 2022, the Tennessee Supreme Court struck down the state’s automatic sentencing of certain juvenile offenders to life without parole. Pike’s lawyers argued that the reasoning should have consequences for her case too, pointing to her age and mental health at the time of the murder.

There was a problem.

Pike was 18. Legally, she was an adult.

In 2023, a Knox County judge rejected the attempt to reopen her case, explaining that the Supreme Court’s ruling concerned juvenile offenders, not adults.

The legal door closed.

Then, on September 30, 2025, the Tennessee Supreme Court issued the order that put a date on the death sentence:

September 30, 2026.

Pike was given the choice between lethal injection and electrocution.

After almost 30 years of litigation, the date was finally set, but what happened on September 30, 2026 is a story of its own. 😳

Stay tuned.

Today, Canada observes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. 🇨🇦

The orange shirt has become a powerful symbol of remembrance, but today is about so much more. It is about honouring Survivors, remembering the children who never returned home, and recognizing the enduring strength and resilience of Indigenous Peoples and communities across Canada.

Reconciliation cannot be separated from truth. We cannot move forward without acknowledging what happened, listening to Indigenous voices, understanding the history we have inherited, and recognizing that its effects continue to be felt today.

Justice begins with truth, but reconciliation asks something more of all of us. It calls for listening, accountability, respect, and a willingness to learn and do better.

September 30 is not a finish line. It is a reminder that reconciliation is ongoing, reflected not only in laws and institutions, but in our communities, conversations, choices, and the way we understand Canada's history.

Today, we remember.
We listen and honour the survivors and those who never came home. And we recommit ourselves to the work of reconciliation. 🧡

Should AI-assisted facial recognition continue to be used in policing when a mistake could potentially cost someone their freedom?

Who should be held responsible for mistakes?

She was in Tennessee.
Police said she was connected to a bank-fraud case in North Dakota.

Then she spent six months behind bars.

The technology that allegedly helped identify her?

AI-powered facial recognition. 😳

Angela Lipps says she had never even been to North Dakota and that her bank records showed she was in Tennessee when the alleged fraud occurred.

She was arrested in Tennessee and remained in custody for approximately six months before being released in December.

Now, she is suing the City of Fargo and a police detective, alleging violations of her civil rights and malicious prosecution.

What happens when technology used to identify a suspect gets it wrong?

I’d choose a kind person over titles any day. Titles may tell you what someone has achieved, but character tells you who they are.

The true gauge of a person is how they make others feel. Kindness leaves a lasting impression, long after the titles are forgotten.
