💗💚💗 @ntmofa_tw On the occasion of the opening of the “2026 Taiwan International Print Biennial,” a special “Artist Forum” will be held, inviting 9 prize-winning artists from Thailand, Taiwan, Poland, India, and Spain. Additionally, printmaking artist and scholar Jennifer Schmidt (Professor of the Practice in Print, School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, Boston) will deliver a keynote speech exploring the relationship between contemporary printmaking practices and digital files. Through expert lectures and presentations of the artists’ prize-winning works, this forum aims to share the diverse facets and emerging trends of printmaking art with the public.💗 after a typhoon and a day in the hotel, we gathered for the artist forum at the national taiwan museum of fine arts. translated simultaneously in many languages (polish, english, spanish, thai, mandarin…) the award ceremony highlighted the work of printmakers from around the globe, while encouraging discourse about print today. #printmaking#print#contemporaryprintmaking #biennial by @jenniferannschmidt

Jennifer Schmidt“Performative Print: The File as prompt (extended)” Through the presentation and discussion of artistic projects, events, and technology, I will explore how contemporary print practice and theories of multiplicity are influenced by the role of the digital file as a “performer” who performs across media; “enacting” moments of making within a circular economy of images, materials, and ideas. Specific attention will be given to how the digital file becomes a prompt and catalyst for learning old and new technologies, encouraging research and skill development in relation to craft, material, and industrial histories. The file is an artifact that can be altered and adapted depending on situational context, allowing multiple states of invention across media. Despite being intangible as a matrix, the quotation and adaptation of “the file” involving technology allows for many forms of output—where the provenance, role, and manifestation of the file as an image/object/text/data— becomes a “script” of actions, utterances, and decisions embedded in the artistic result. I’m looking forward to presenting at the Artist Forum of 2026 Taiwan International Print Biennial at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, where I will be a keynote speaker. It’s wonderful to be able to situate my work within the context of a museum showcasing the history and manufacture of textiles involving weaving and print technologies— my Cardboard Blocks performative/sculptural installation conceptually and technically relates to this: in its making, design/patterning, and display. Pictured here: is my installation, a jacquard loom with punch cards, textile bedspreads that are woven and screenprinted, punch card making machine, punch card lacing machine, large silkscreens for printing repeats, and details of the printed and arranged block patterns in my installation (stacked, placed, and varied as a pattern to play with perspective, color, design, and repeats in 3-dimension using screenprinted and die-cut cardboard blocks self-manufactured by the artist, replicating red, blue, and yellow blocks found in her children’s play-space. Guest curated by Alexis Iammarino @iammavision , the exhibit showcases the collaborative publication which gives its attention to brick. The exhibit reflects the museum’s broader mission to connect art, history, industry, and community through exhibitions rooted in the stories and materials of Maine.Drawing on Lewiston and Auburn’s legacy as centers of brick production, A Common Bond explores the intersections of craft, labor, industry, and community through the work of contemporary artists. The exhibition combines visual art, archival material and production artifacts to examine how place, historical memory, material culture and the built environment shape collective identity. ✨Visitors are invited to experience The Brick Journal as both a text and image-based art object and an ode to printed matter with the technical story of its material production as an offset newspaper, printed in Newcastle and Lewiston, Maine. Jennifer Schmidt printing “Parallelogram: The Waves” - an ongoing performative letterpress printing project inspired by Virginia Woolf’s novel “The Waves,” feminist theory, and events happening in time. Since 2017, Jennifer has traveled and printed at many letterpress studios using Vandercook, Fage and Korrex “textual” machines as an itinerant printer— to produce an ephemeral archive of images on text weight paper. Printed in red, green, and blue ink. The prints exist as chapters and folios on a continuum as part of an unbound book. I just returned from a letterpress artist residency @wells_book_arts @hwsartandarchitecture at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in upstate New York 💫 where I continued my performative print project “Parallelogram: The waves” — printing an ephemeral archive of images on 8.5” x 11” text weight paper using red, green, and blue Pantone inks using a Vandercook 4 machine. This project is inspired by Virginia Woolf’s novel “The Waves” involving a cast of characters who are in conversational dialogue within a shifting space that is at once descriptive and contextual—subject to perception. The event exists parallel to an event in time. 2017- present 💫 ❤️💚💙 the folios/chapters of images - abstract, pictorial, some in sets of multiples, are to be scattered, stacked, hung, flung, set, and placed in the hands of the viewer.
