The Gatehouse Coffee Shop & Mercantile Morris, NY
@thegatehouseny

Around 1 p.m. on any given Sunday, a passerby might wonder why so many cars are parked in the small village of Morris. If curiosity leads them through the doors of The Gatehouse Coffee Shop and Mercantile at 129 Main Street, they are likely to find every café table occupied, conversations filling the room alongside the aroma of fresh coffee and the sounds of live music. Between songs, the occasional clip-clop of an Amish carriage passing outside becomes part of the afternoon soundtrack.

Since opening in September 2023, proprietors Timothy Atticus and Chris Riffle have transformed a once-vacant storefront into a gathering place where people linger, connect and return, bringing renewed energy to this Central New York village.

Having previously lived in New York City and Seattle, Atticus and Riffle envisioned blending the artistic spirit of the city with Seattle’s celebrated coffee culture while showcasing the extraordinary makers, growers and artists found throughout the region. By all appearances, that vision has come to life.

I’m very thrilled to announce that one of my mom’s most beloved projects is continuing.

Janet’s good friend and fellow photographer Jenny Riffle is taking over The Pinhole Project, which Janet started in 2013 using pinhole cameras made from Altoids tins. Over the years, thousands of students and photography enthusiasts participated.

Janet loved pinhole photography because it was accessible, unpredictable, and full of adventure (just like her). She truly believed there was no such thing as a bad pinhole image, and that almost anything could become a camera if you tried hard enough.

In the late summer of 2024, shortly before we moved her into Assisted Living, she had 25 new Altoids tin cameras made. She desperately wanted to keep the project going, but her health declined and they ended up sitting in a box.

So when Jenny offered to continue the project, I immediately thought of those cameras.

If you’d like to participate in the next chapter of The Pinhole Project in Janet’s honor, please contact Jenny at jenny.riffle@gmail.com. She’ll mail you a camera, a prepaid return envelope, and instructions.

I cannot tell you how happy I am that this project will live on through someone who loved pinhole photography as much as she did. She would be so pleased.

And thank you to everyone that sent me photos of her with her two most beloved cameras! It’s wonderful to see her in her element. If you’d like a long-form version of my ramblings about Janet, please send me your email address. by @jennyriffle

We think the Butternut Valley is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Join us this Friday, October 2nd, from 4–6 pm for the opening of Butternut Valley: Photographs by Jenny Riffle at The Gatehouse.

Jenny moved to the valley three years ago, and since then she’s been photographing the landscapes, forests, back roads, and quiet corners of the place she now calls home. Drawn to the natural world, her work explores its beauty and mystery, and our relationship with the environments around us.

Come see the work, have a drink, and celebrate this beautiful place we get to call home.

New pinhole exposed for over a year! May 1, 2025 to August 2, 2026. I was worried it would be wet and moldy but it’s perfect ✨ love how light the ground is because of all the snow last winter.

I’m excited to be teaching a Pinhole Photography Workshop on Saturday, August 29, from 1–3 PM at The Gatehouse - link in bio to sign up.

Pinhole photography is one of the oldest photographic processes, and it encourages us to see time, light, and the landscape differently. In this hands-on workshop, I’ll share a bit of the history behind the process, my own approach to making long-exposure images, and guide you through building your own pinhole camera using simple materials.

You’ll also learn how to scan and process your paper negatives at home—no darkroom required—so you can keep creating long after the workshop ends.

No experience is necessary, and all materials are provided. Just bring your curiosity. $50 per person, includes materials for two cameras.

I have two Polaroid images included in Spectral Lineage: Parlor of Shadows and more available at the gallery, on view until Aug 9 @theseattlelightroom !

I made these with expired Spectra Polaroid film and the developing chemistry was half dried up and the colors were off, creating surreal landscapes.

———————————————

Riffle’s work What is a ghost? approaches the parlor as a haunted threshold between presence and absence. Using long-exposure pinhole images, lumen prints, expired film, and the tricks of photography her work reflects on spiritualism, belief, and photography’s historical role in visualizing the invisible. Forests, orbs, and blurred forms become spectral impressions, suggesting energies that linger beyond what can be seen or fully known.

Spectral Lineage: Parlor of Shadows EXTENDED THROUGH AUGUST 9!

Come on by this weekend though next weekend, Last chance to see the work up @theseattlelightroom

Spectral Lineage: Parlor of Shadows brings together the photographic works of Ann Pallesen and Jenny Riffle in a joint exploration of memory, domestic interiors, and the unseen. Drawing on historical photographic processes and immersive installation strategies, the exhibition situates the domestic parlor as a site of lineage, ritual, and lingering presence.

Pallesen’s work Era unfolds as a layered salon installation that draws inspiration from Victorian courtship, matriarchal lineage, and treasured heirlooms. Her vintage reverse-painted silhouette portraits and hand-printed lith prints evoke intimate pasts and imagined narratives, placing figures within idyllic, shifting landscapes that respond to light and shadow. Photographs informed by family archives, early travel postcards, and domestic artifacts further explore inheritance and the ways objects carry memory across generations.

Together, their work examines how images and objects record presence and absence, creating spaces where memory, history, and the ephemeral converge.

Forests have been in my work for a long time, and continue to haunt me.

Here are some forests currently on view in my joint show with Ann Pallesen- Spectral Lineage: Parlor of Shadows up until August 1st at The Seattle Light Room!

When Ann and I were planning the show we were thinking of what we could do with a window that was in the middle of an interior wall in the gallery. Ann owns one of my forest prints and she had an idea that was inspired by her living room with my print hanging on the wall and her green velvet curtains! So we created a little window installation - thanks to @annubells and her mad curatorial skills. Come sit by our window and gaze into the dark forest- you never know what you will see…
