My first solo outdoor bowdrill fire 🔥🙌! Clearly, I was super excited. Super proud of my progress in this skill, and I'm still working away at it- stay tuned!
Spindle and hearthboard- cedar. Bow and handhold- oak. Cord- paracord.

My first successful flint+steel fire!
A long time coming, this was a big win for me. Another fun way to start fire, and another opportunity to practice turning ember to flame in a tinder bundle. Can't wait to fine tune this skill 😊

If you follow along in my stories, you'll know that a lot of my spare time is spent seeking out and catching critters with my kiddos. Here's a few of my favorite shots from this summer 🤩

I've wanted to do this one for years- thought I'd put a little spin on it and include some of my favorite survival/bushcraft skills 😁
Happy Halloween y'all! My favorite holiday! 👻🎃💀🕸️🕷️

My attempt at the spring powered wire share - credit to (and excellently taught by) @sagesmokesurvival and introduced to me by @agaracademy . The benefit of this snare is that the wire holds the memory of the smaller loop, so once the animal initially enters the snare, the loop gets smaller and harder to escape. Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to try to catch game with this snare yet (I'd like to be close by to ensure my catch doesn't suffer), but I'm excited to put it to the real test in the near future! Once you understand the mechanism of this snare, it's easy to set up- I have a few lengths of wire stashed in my EDC bag just for this purpose.
What's your go to trap or snare?

I've been on some awesome hikes this year, but the Whirlpool Trail in Niagara took the cake for my favorite. This hike was quite challenging, but we were rewarded with views I still can't get over 😍. Can't wait for my next visit to this magical spot!

Another bowdrill practice- this time with a new cedar spindle and hearth board. This is definitely my preferred setup for bowdrill, as far as height of the spindle and thickness of the hearth goes. Was nice to get back to basics and enjoy an easily earned coal during this practise... On the next video, there'll be a switch up! Stay tuned!

Knot, untie, repeat: practising setting up ridgelines, and taking my knot practice out of the house and into the forest. Repeating until it feels natural, and playing with variations. Being ready to use this setup in the wind, rain, snow, or dark.
In this case, I used an evenk hitch, a truckers hitch, and a prusik knot.
What's your go to setup?

Even when I was enjoying a weekend free of responsibilities, I found time to keep a few of my skills sharp. Stuck with my goal of using natural materials (in this case, birch bark and fatwood) and my Ferro rod for firestarting. Found some standing deadwood for kindling and I was set.
What's a skill you love to practice?

Bowdrill by the firepit take two: new spindle, new hearth board, and some adjustments to my form and technique made this day a lot smoother and more successful. Big thanks to my instructor @agaracademy for talking and watching things through with me to ensure that I'm on the right track!

An imperfect bowdrill session, but persistence paid off, a coal was made, and the fire was started 💪🔥 I'll be posting the next day's attempt next and it's a fun comparison- seeing what the struggles and challenges of this session taught me, and how I changed things up.

Trying to let a little more of my personality show on my page... Buckle up 😬😆
