Have you ever put off a health appointment because you thought, ā€˜I should get my sleep, my eating, or my exercise sorted out first’?

You don’t need to do that before coming to see me.

You can arrive tired, unsure where to start, or with questions you haven’t quite figured out how to ask.

My role isn’t to grade your habits.

It’s to listen, understand what’s changed, and work with you on appropriate next steps—including involving other healthcare providers when needed.

We don’t have to tackle everything at once. A useful plan needs to fit your actual life. taken in Toronto, Ontario by @jenparsonsnd

We met before we could tie our shoes.
Four decades, three continents, countless life changes later—we’re still finishing each other’s sentences.

Some things really do get better with time.

Here’s what the research says about friendships like these:

Strong social bonds are linked to:
āœ”ļø Lower cortisol levels
āœ”ļø Better cardiovascular health
āœ”ļø Reduced risk of cognitive decline
āœ”ļø Increased longevity (yes, actually)

Turns out ā€œlet’s plan a girls’ tripā€ might be a legitimate health intervention.

As a naturopathic doctor, I talk a lot about nutrient deficiencies.
But there’s one I don’t see on any lab panel: connection deficiency.

We can optimize our supplements, our sleep, our morning routines—
and still feel depleted if we’re doing it all alone.

What this trip reminded me:

Healing isn’t just physical. It’s relational.
The nervous system calms in the presence of people who *know* you—
the good, the awkward, the ā€œremember whenā€ versions of you.

So here’s my prescription this week:
Call the friend who’s known you the longest.
Not to catch up on logistics—
just to laugh about something ridiculous from 1995.

Your nervous system will thank you.

🌸 Last month, I had a patient stop me in my tracks when she asked:

How do you know who you are or what you want if you’re always in survival mode?

Yikes! Good point!

I found these 5 questions that helped her answer her own question. See which ones you get stuck on. (for me it was number 2)

1. What do I enjoy simply because it brings me joy?
2. What does rest look like when I don’t feel guilty?
3. When I feel safe and unhurried, what kind of person do I naturally become?
4. Who am I when I’m not trying to prove anything to anyone- even myself?
5. What parts of my personality have I hidden to feel safe and protected?

Also, scroll to the last slide to see Daisy thinking that she still fits on my lap! 🌼🐶

Sometimes, rest looks like folding laundry in silence, letting your mind wander as you switch loads, or simply stepping away from screens and constant notifications.

These small, rhythmic tasks can be a reset — a chance to slow down, breathe, and be present. It’s also a moment to switch your brain off and just move through a state of flow, letting your hands do the work while your mind unwinds. Instead of rushing through chores, I’ve started treating them as built-in breaks from the mental load of the day.

Have you ever found rest in the everyday? 🩷

Sometimes, we don’t realize we’re running on empty until our body forces us to slow down. Rest isn’t just about sleep, it’s about allowing yourself to pause before burnout hits 🩷

I’ve learned to recognize the subtle (and not-so-subtle) signs that I need more rest — things like feeling unmotivated, craving extra caffeine, or struggling to focus. The more we listen to these cues, the better we can support our body before exhaustion takes over.

And sometimes these symptoms can be signs of something else: Low iron, low B12, hormonal changes, thyroid issues, etc.. Don’t ignore these signs. Talk to your naturopathic doctor or health care practitioner to dig a little deeper.

What’s one way you’re prioritizing rest this week? Let’s share below ā¬‡ļø

Rest isn’t just about sleeping in or taking breaks — it’s also about feeling supported. Let me tell you, nothing feels more restful than hearing ā€œI got you.ā€

Rest can look like:
✨ Knowing you don’t have to do everything alone. Lean on family, friends, or community. ( If you feel alone, reach out and I’ll help you find a support system.)
✨ Feeling supported without having to ask. (Am I right?)
✨ Letting go of the mental load and allowing others to step in. (This is not an easy one for me…I’m working on it)

Who or what makes you feel taken care of?

If you ever feel like you should be doing something ā€œproductiveā€ instead of resting — this is your reminder that rest IS productive. Your body and mind can’t function at their best if you’re running on empty.

Here’s how I prioritize rest without the guilt:
šŸ› Remind myself that rest fuels productivity — Burnout helps no one.
šŸ“… Schedule rest like an appointment — If it’s in my calendar, I commit to it.
🌿 Find rest that fits my personality — Cooking, reading, walking, or maybe a cuddle with Daisy!
šŸ“µ Set boundaries — Putting my phone on Do Not Disturb when I’m taking my breaks.
šŸ’” Reframe rest as essential — When I take care of myself, I show up better for others.

Rest isn’t lazy. It’s the reset your body needs. What’s your favorite way to recharge? Share below 🩷

Carbs don’t have to be the enemy — it’s all about how you eat them! When we eat carbs alone, they break down into glucose quickly, leading to blood sugar spikes (hello, energy crashes and cravings). But when we ā€œdressā€ our carbs with protein, fiber, and healthy fats, we slow digestion and keep blood sugar stable.

Here’s how I do it:
🄦 Eat veggies & protein first – This slows the absorption of glucose, reducing insulin spikes and supporting gut health. Fiber feeds good gut bacteria, while protein keeps you full longer.
šŸ„‘ Add healthy fats – Fats like avocado, nuts, and olive oil help stabilize blood sugar and improve nutrient absorption.
šŸ  Choose fiber-rich carbs – Whole food sources like sweet potatoes, quinoa, and legumes digest more slowly, preventing crashes.
šŸ— Pair carbs with protein – Protein slows the breakdown of sugar, keeping your energy steady and reducing cravings.

If you’re curious about balancing your blood sugar, let’s chat ā¬‡ļø

Did you know that 42% of your day should be dedicated to mental & physical wellness? That’s about 10 hours—including sleep and intentional rest. Yet, so many of us push through exhaustion without recharging - normal, I’m guilty of that too.

But, whenever I can, here’s how I weave rest into my daily routine:
šŸ› 8 hours of sleep (I try my best).
ā˜• Intentional breaks: Stepping away from screens every 30 minutes on research days.
šŸš¶ā€ā™€ļø Movement breaks: A walk or stretch to reset.
šŸ“… 3 focused patient days + 2 focused research and admin days to prevent burnout.
šŸŒ™ Evening wind-down: Reading, journaling, or, my favourite, board games with my family!

Rest isn’t just sleep—it’s anything that recharges your body & mind. How do you incorporate rest into your day? Share below! ā¬‡ļø

I cannot emphasize enough the large connection between mental and physical health ✨

At 21 I began to notice rapid weight gain, intense emotions, OCD spike, anxiety, lack of confidence, digestive issues, bloating, and sensitivities.

It was not until I got to the root cause of emotional and hormonal/ gut issues that my life began to transform.

When you feel your body is against you, believe in the light at the end of the tunnel. I thought I was stuck in a dark place, but if you trust in the process there will always be light. Thank you to @jenparsonsnd for being a light on my healing journey

Attention, brilliant minds! šŸŽ“ As perimenopause rolls in, it might amplify ADHD symptoms due to hormonal fluctuations. This leads to increased forgetfulness and focus issues, making everyday tasks feel monumental. āš–ļø

*Pro Tip:* Implement the Pomodoro Technique. šŸ…

ā²ļøPlan My Day: I start by mapping out my tasks and allocating šŸ…s (25-minute intervals) to each one
ā²ļøShort Breaks: After each šŸ…, I take a 5-minute break to recharge
ā²ļøLong Breaks: After every 4 šŸ…s, I reward myself with a 30-minute break — whether it’s a quick walk or playtime with my dog Daisy šŸ¶šŸš¶ā€ā™€ļø

Give it a try and see how it boosts your productivity! šŸ’ŖāœØ
