Counter Sprawl From K Guard by @jon_calestine

Jon hit a similar entry at the ADCC trials, from more of a north south position.

When the opponent sprawls to defend against the K-Guard, it exposes their other leg, providing an opportunity to attack.

K Guard To Backside 50/50 Heel Hook by @jon_calestine

When the opponent tries to push the feet down, the transition is initiated by throwing one foot over while aiming the other foot across the opponent’s hip to help cut the angle and weave through.

To prevent the opponent from pulling their leg out during the transition, grip their ankle and push it against the shoulder, creating a sticky connection. Lock up in a full figure four, maintaining tension against the opponent’s leg.

It’s crucial to avoid staying flat on the back during the finish, as this makes it easier for the opponent to backstep and hide their heel. Instead, force the backside position by bringing the elbow in and applying the appropriate grip to secure the submission.

K Guard Cross Knee Pull Entry by @jon_calestine

Initiating a cross knee pull should be done with caution to avoid exposing oneself to underhooks, knee cuts, arm drags, front headlocks, or Kimura attempts.

The key is to win the hand fight first and wait for the opponent to pull away, which serves as the cue to engage the cross knee pull.

K Guard Baseball Grip Entry by @jon_calestine

When the opponent attempts to push or clear a collar tie, establish the baseball bat grip, ensuring the inside hand is first if possible.

Reinforce the grip by crossing the thumbs and resting the fingers over each other.

Avoid pulling straight back into K guard; instead, pull at an angle as the opponent pulls their elbow to their body.

Allow the opponent’s motion to assist in pulling you into the guard, ensuring you fall at an angle closer to them.

Once in position, establish a strong K guard with the elbow inside the knee and an active hook, putting you in position to immediately attack from there.

*New Content* 30+ minutes of rolling commentary has been added to @jon_calestine’s Lord of the Guards: Guard Retention course now available on Digitsu!

In this sequence, Jon explains how to retain guard using side guard.

When your opponent is passing on the outside. To maintain the position and recover, stay on your side towards your opponent connecting your knee and elbow on the near side. Frame your own hip on the far side to prevent your hips from being turned away. If they can turn your hips away, they can start to separate your knee and elbow on the near side and finish the pass.

This past weekend we had the pleasure of filming a new course on the K Guard with @jon_calestine.

We are super excited about this course. It takes off where Jon’s “Lord of the Guards” guard retention course left off. Offering counter attack sequences from guard retention positions.

It will also go over all aspects of the k guard position, including entries, attack sequences, k guard defenses, and include rolling commentary.

Look out for its release in the coming months!
