On March 16th 2024, William Alvin Botkin aka Bill passed away at the VA center in San Francisco, California. Bill or “Biological Bill” as he was known to me when growing up was my grandfather. My mother met him for the first time in her adult life, two weeks before he passed. After he passed we cleaned out his property in northern California and although I did not meet him I was able to connect through his belongings and learn a lot about his life. We met his neighbors all of who said he was kind and funny. It was surreal and truly bittersweet to go through his life through his things.

Bill wanted us to care for his best friend, a small nearing elderly chihuahua named Caesar, who seemingly didn’t spend a minute apart from Bill. He loved music, especially the grateful dead. He has the word “FUCK” tattooed on his knuckles. He was a Vietnam war veteran. He wrote nearly every plan, list, address and phone number he knew on the back of envelopes. At one point in his life he wrote down “Jared Braswell” on the back of an envelope. He seemed to be the kind of person who gave a lot to those around him, often to his own detriment.

It’s truly surreal to piece together a life from the puzzle of what one leaves behind after they’re dead. I am reminded more and more that all we do take with us when we die are our memories. Selfishly if I could ask him one question it wouldn’t even be about him it would be about my grandma, whom he left in the 70’s, and who passed in 2001, and of whom he had memories of no one else did.

He will not be buried, we are already working on spreading his ashes. In my opinion he was a man who carried a lot of shame, guilt, and fear, and it kept him from the thing he seemingly wanted most, love. taken in San Francisco, California by @jerdyjerdtown

I love this woman soo much!!!!!!! She is the most resilient, smart, loving, and thoughtful person I know and I am so so thankful she is my Mother!!!
