Some fires are lit for warmth.

Some are lit so the old things know we haven’t forgotten. 🔥🌙

The flame endures.

Lament for the Butt Tree

I brought my daughter into the woods today
to show her something immortal.

Her brother had stood beneath it once,
small enough that ten years
was longer than he could imagine.

There, among the trees,
we had found a wonder,
a great old trunk bent strangely by the earth,
bearing, inexplicably,
the unmistakable shape of a butt.

And because we loved it,
we made it sacred.

We named it.
We laughed at it.
We told its story.

Today we went looking for it again.

We made a quest of it,
as adventurers should.
Through fern and fungus,
through leaf and briar,
we searched for the old guardian of the wood.

We were going to cleanse the sacred Butt Tree.

But the forest had already claimed it.

Sometime in the years when we were elsewhere,
it fell.

No herald sounded.
No messenger came to tell us.

The seasons simply passed over it,
rain upon rain,
summer upon summer,
until the great tree lay quietly
among the leaves.

And there it was.

Dead.

And somehow,
the butt was bigger than ever.

Oh, mighty Butt Tree.

You absolute idiot.

I thought you would be there forever.

Perhaps that is the foolishness of parents.
We believe the landmarks of our children’s childhoods
have agreed to wait for us.

But children grow.
Trees fall.
Forests swallow their own stories.

My son once stood beside you, little.

Today my daughter stood where he had stood.

And for one afternoon
ten years disappeared.

The forest was the same forest.
I was the same fool telling the same story.

And you were still there

fallen, hollowing,
covered in mushrooms,
returning yourself piece by piece to the earth,

but unmistakably,

gloriously,

still a butt.

So rest now, old friend.

May beetles tunnel through your halls.
May mushrooms crown your ruined kingdom.
May green things rise from what remains of you.

And someday, when my children tell someone
about the legendary Butt Tree
hidden deep within the woods,

perhaps they will laugh.

I hope they do.

Because that is how you will live forever.

Not standing,

but remembered.

The Butt Tree is dead.
