My work Lowak Shoppala' (Fire and Light) is featured on the American Composers Orchestra’s album America in Weimar: On the Margins, released digitally on Platoon.     Clans focuses on seven of these family lines—Minko Hall’s Fall of the Weimar Republic: Dancing on the Precipice, a citywide festival in 2024 exploring the thriving creative period in Germany between World War I and World War II. Led by conductor and pianist Rei Hotoda, the program features my piece alongside music by iconic American composers George Antheil, Duke Ellington, and Kurt Weill, and new works by John Glover & Kelley Rourke and Tonia Ko that reflect on parallels and redirections of the past, with performances by mezzo-soprano Chrystal E. Williams and accordionist Felipe Hostins.

Lowak Shoppala' (Fire and Light) is a work that expresses Chickasaw identity through modern classical music and theater. The entire work is in eight scenes and features an orchestra, narration, children’s chorus, traditional Chickasaw and modern dancers, traditional Chickasaw and classical vocalists, and Chickasaw storytellers. Each scene depicts a part of Chickasaw culture and history; Clans is the fourth of eight scenes. In traditional Chickasaw culture, a family clan system was maintained through matrilineal descent. Each clan has an animal name. Clans focuses on seven of these family lines—Minko, Bird, Alligator, Squirrel, Skunk, Panther, and Raccoon—and incorporates numerous traditional Chickasaw melodies and rhythms.

In partnership with Debaser, askiy collective are proud to première I̱hollo Taloowa’ (Love Songs) by renowned Chickasaw composer Jerod Impichcha̱achaaha’ Tate at Pique #21. This four-part suite for flute and piano was commissioned by askiy’s @indigenousflutist for herself and @bev.piano

V.J. Sparvier-Wells and Beverley McKiver are part of a vanguard of Indigenous musicians and composers making their mark in contemporary classical music. V. J. Sparvier-Wells is a leader in commissioning, performing and recording works by Indigenous composers, including her own. McKiver’s work has been lauded by American Music Teacher Magazine and included in the Royal Conservatory of Canada’s syllabus. Both composers were contributors to the ground-breaking “Weaving Sounds”, a volume of elementary piano pieces by Native and Indigenous composers.

Sparvier-Wells and McKiver invite acclaimed solo violist Kathryn Patricia Cobbler @kathrynpatriciaviolist to complete askiy collective. Cobbler was featured in the Boston based Concert series, Castle of Our Skin’s Black Composers Miniature Challenge, and recently commissioned by the National Art Gallery of Canada to compose a piece of music for their exhibit, Uninvited: Canadian Women Artists in the Modern Moment.

Don’t miss this world premiere presentation of I̱hollo Taloowa’ (Love Songs) by Jerod Impichcha̱achaaha’ Tate, presented alongside compositions and improvisational scores by Sparvier-Wells and McKiver, performed by askiy collective at Piqeu #21. As Americans stand together today in solemn remembrance of the events of Sept. 11, 2001, we are reminded of the collective sense of compassion that prevailed to help our country persevere and heal.

We continue to remember the people we lost, and we continue to share our deep gratitude for the many responders whose actions exemplified what duty and service to our fellow Americans truly means.
