Sounds of the Vic in conversation with “Betty” by Gerhard Richter

Sounds of the Vic speaks to the experience of living in the city through the sounds and images that become part of everyday life. The distant sound of police sirens, the sudden wash of police lights, and the constant activity happening beyond the home are all familiar elements of urban life. They can create a sense of tension and awareness, but they can also become so familiar that they blend into the rhythm of everyday living.

For me, Sounds of the Vic is about that relationship between intimacy and the city. The home offers a sense of familiarity and refuge, while the porch opens that space back up to the sounds, movement, and unpredictability of the neighborhood. The police lights and sirens become part of the visual and sonic memory of growing up in an urban environment—not necessarily representing one specific event, but the atmosphere of a place and the things you learn to recognize simply by living there.

The painting ultimately considers how place is remembered not only through what we see, but through what we hear. The sounds of the city, the sirens, the cars, conversations, music, and activity, become part of our memory of home. The porch is where those worlds meet. by @jerrellgibbs

COME HOME WITH ME on display @baltimoremuseumofart
A few installation photos by Mitro Hood

For this exhibition, I wanted to invite people into the place I grew up into my memories, my family, and the everyday moments that shaped me.

A big part of my process has been thinking about the relationship between my family photographs and the master paintings of the past. I’ve always been interested in how artists throughout history have depicted family, intimacy, domestic life, gesture, and the human experience.

I began looking at those paintings alongside photographs from my own family archive, finding moments where a pose, gesture, composition, or feeling in one of my family photographs echoed something I saw in a historical painting.

The work becomes a conversation between the personal and the historical, between memory and art history, between the images I inherited from my family and the images I’ve inherited through the history of painting.

I’m interested in what happens when those two worlds meet, and what it means to place the ordinary experiences of a Black family within the larger history of painting.

Come Home With Me is an invitation to see where I come from, but also to see how I see it.
