I haven’t been nervous in a while, I forgot how good that feeling can be when you need solid earth under a shifting sky.

The pressure smashed a strong performance out of me, my new piece “Broken Clocks” written as a response to the theme of contradictions in Whitman’s Leaves of grass was well received.

I received a gift last night from Jordan, the owner of comedy off broadway in Lexington. It’s a club I’ve wanted to play for a long time.

Early in my career I worked with Vic Henley several times as I worked my way from mc to feature. He was a mentor to me and taught me a great deal about comedy writing and this business. He was my good friend.

Losing him in 2020 broke my heart. We had spoken just a week or so before he passed and talked regularly. He was one of my few friends in the business that stayed in contact with me even when I walked away from it all for a while.

Jordan came into the green room tonight and he said “I remember where I heard your name before, Vic Henley talked about you all the time, asked me to book you and it just never worked out where I could get you here with him.”

It was like hearing from him after the grave, my buddy was looking out for me.

He was speaking my names in rooms I wasn’t in.

I’m sitting at the Lexington airport waiting on my ride to Dallas and Rachael thinking about how lucky
I was to have him for a teacher and a friend.

Imagine my surprise when Broadway Dallas reached out to me to book this guy for the Whitman on Walls event at the State Fair of Texas. Not for comedy, no no no…but for poetry and storytelling!

It was an exercise in my most top tier logistical prowess pulling off the last couple of weeks leading up to this event, but I am excited that I get to attend alongside Jerry to witness his first poetry gig AND spend a weekend with my guy for some J&R R&R.

Have I said lately how proud of my guy I am? He’s something else, y’all. 💜

This is another one of those places I dreamed about playing. Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle has been in continuous operation for over 48 years and I made it to this hallowed hallway in my 49th year.

Don’t let no one tell you it’s too late.

Unless you’re trying to be an astronaut or a pro athlete, I mean some things have a clock.

Time to make the haha💙
