On September 14th, my beloved friend of forty years walked into the sea. With her, she took beauty, kindness, and talent that can never be replicated. She took her way of looking at the world that not only captured the allure, but celebrated the flaws. To be seen by Christine was to feel accepted for who and what you were, even if it wasn’t your best. Her eye caught the shadows and brought them into the light.

My friend of forty years walked into the sea, and took a deep voice that soothed and a quiet laugh that encouraged. Our stories were a little more sparkly when Christine was listening, chin resting on a long delicate hand. When I can no longer conjure the sound of that laugh, then I will know she is truly gone.

Christine walked through the world leaning forward, eyes-first, with a long loping gait designed to cover ground while taking up little space. She was always an observer, camera on her hip, but she could never go unnoticed. At six feet tall with innate style, her looks captured your attention, and her warmth and depth held onto it for decades.

It is no surprise that the people mourning Christine have cherished her for a lifetime. Students who came back years after graduation; nieces and nephews we all knew through her stories and photos; friends who planned on growing old together. Christine wasn’t just a part of our lives, she was a vital element. A quiet compass. A keeper and curator of our histories.

My friend of forty years walked into the sea, and while those who loved her grapple with our loss, I hope the sea knows just what an extraordinary gift it was given, and received her with the comforting embrace she had sought for so long. by @jerseybiscuit
