“I’m not good in front of a camera.”Is one of the things almost every couple tells me before we start filming.The truth is you don’t have to be.You don’t need to know how to pose.You don’t need to act.You don’t need to be a model.My job is to create moments where the camera disappears, so you can just be yourself.A little direction goes a long way. Almost every couple tells me the same thing before their wedding. They don’t want stiff, over-posed photos. They want it to feel real. What most people don’t realize is real doesn’t happen by accident. It still has to be directed, just not the way you’d think. Here’s exactly how.#weddingfilmmaker #vancouverweddings The second I ask someone to pose, their whole body changes. Shoulders go stiff, smiles go flat. So instead I give them something small to do. Fix his tie. Adjust her veil. The moment they’re focused on a task instead of the camera, the real version of them shows back up.Before the reception even starts, I’ll ask a couple to run through their first dance. It has nothing to do with getting the steps right. It’s about pulling them back into the memory of choosing that song together, and that’s what shows up on their faces, not the choreography.At some point in the night I’ll pull a couple aside, put their song on, and give them two minutes. No guests, no schedule, no one waiting on them. Most couples don’t get a single quiet moment together on their wedding day. That’s usually where the best shot of the night happens.I never tell a couple to look at each other. It always comes out forced. Instead I’ll ask something like “when did you know?” It’s a question they actually have to think about, and answering it pulls their eyes to each other without me saying a word.Not every moment needs direction. Sometimes the best thing I can do is stay quiet, stay out of the way, and let a couple exist in a moment without me shaping it at all. Those are usually the ones people remember most. by @jesko.films
