Edgar, 15 years with you just wasn’t enough. And I know you had more life left to live. But cancer wouldn’t allow it. You persevered with almost no teeth, almost no hearing, poor vision, degenerative disc disease and a leaky heart valve. Not just persevered, you thrived. Lung cancer was just too much to overcome.

Our best buddy and our companion, we were devastated to have to let you go. You came into our lives as newlyweds and made four moves with us, including three different states. You didn’t care where we were going, as long as it was together. We hardly know a life without you in it. You’ve left a giant hole in our hearts and one I’m not sure we can ever fill.

Edgar was curious, clever and affectionate. He was fiercely loyal to us and almost no one else. We were his people and he didn’t really trust anyone else. He loved to cuddle and shower us with smooches, and I think that’s what we’ll miss most.

We know most people don’t get 15 years with their fur babies and we are so thankful for the time we got with Edgar.

Today I successfully defended my treatise, earning my Doctorate of Education from @utaustintx, joining the approximately 1% of Latinas with a doctoral degree.

To my husband and best friend, @k_rodrayguns I am endlessly grateful for your steady support, constant encouragement, and belief in me. Thank you for seeing me in ways I am still learning to see myself. You are the best partner, and I would not have achieved this without you.

To my grandmother, Anita, who is no longer with us but never absent from my thoughts. Since her passing, I have still felt her quiet encouragement, as if she were saying, “You can do this, Granddaughter.”

To my mothers, Rochelle and Angela, thank you for raising me to be confident, resilient, and unafraid to dream big. Your love and encouragement have carried me through every challenge and made this moment possible.

To my dogs, Edgar and Oliver, my loyal writing partners, who stayed by my side through every marathon session. Your companionship, snuggles, and endless affection carried me through the toughest days.
