this is Rouhi. I was in need of a job, and Rouhi was in need of an extra care taker after hours. Rouhi has Parkinson’s, which impairs day to day function, specifically her ability to speak. I found it extremely hard to communicate with Rouhi originally, as it takes great effort for her even to whisper. This brought forward anxiety, what was I missing, was I being helpful, did she feel seen and heard? Slowly as time went on, this anxiety of the un known faded, replaced by a newfound appreciation. At the end of my days, I looked forward to seeing her beautiful face. I started looking forward to slowing down, to stopping and listening for her whisper, only a whisper but full of life, love, joy, pain, and strength. I look forward to taking everything slow, one foot at a time, half a step at a time, a pivot at I time. I look forward to drawing close, so that she could see me and I could see her. Rouhi gracefully, yet ever thoughtlessly displays the beauty of age. Rouhi has taught me that our bodies are vessels, sailing through treterous seas, that bite, create, tear, and habitate. These vessels deteriorate with the beauties, and tragedies in time, only our souls remaining vibrant, and ever so authentic. Rouhi has taught me more about beauty, about slowness, about age, about love, than any person who can scream at the top of their lungs. she has quietly taught me the beauty of the little things typically unnoticed. so if you’ve read this far, here are all the things I love and look forward to every day about Rouhi: she’s slow to speak, she chooses her words carefully, she always repeats herself for you, she’s kind amidst pain, she prays for me, she looks at me with wonder, she’s patient, she explains things to me even though she knows I might not understand, she is beautiful, she loves grapes and always shares her sweetest grapes with me. I look forward to those thirty minutes before bed every single day. for Rouhi every breath is precious, but she uses every single one for love, closeness, and in faith. Rouhi is what life is made of. by @jess_will04
