Originally planned during lockdown as a civil elopement with a church ceremony to follow at a later date, but shortly before the wedding date we found out we could have both sides of our family there and a small number of friends. There are so many that I wish could have also been here but couldn’t because of the pandemic ♥️ haven’t been able to decide which photos to post and I’m bummed because the photographer did such a beautiful composition but I couldn’t figure out how to get the full size of the photos on here… one of the highlights of the pandemic for me, despite the terrible situation and through the isolation, it created the perfect opportunity for me to meet, get to know, love, and marry Matteo. taken in Monastero Santi Quattro Coronati by @jessasimms

25 Aprile 2021… a favorite day in the middle of the pandemic… Rome without tourists. Walking around exploring architecture, churches, and art with Matteo’s mom and zia. They surprised me with a beautiful lunch at his zia’s house where Matteo also surprised me with my ring. by @jessasimms

Realizing from now on, no matter where I am, I will always be missing someone... Also realizing, as the world little by little returns to normal and not negating the seriousness or the early loss experienced at the hands of this pandemic, that I will miss some of the slow days of this last year and a half. This is one of them... We had gone to Matteo’s hometown and then almost immediately were put back into another lockdown. I definitely freaked out a little to say the least... After not being able to go outside the previous lockdown and being stuck in a city, it gave me an appreciation to have the sea right outside the front door and be able to walk around breathing in the fresh air and no one else around, exploring the Greek ruins along the beach with no agenda, just us. Those days even though they seemed like a run on sentence at the time, wondering when the months of lockdowns would end, those moments were the silver linings in the midst of the pandemic. And even though I will be glad to be out of it, and see that there are no longer people seriously effected by Covid or loosing loved ones to it, I will miss those moments. As life gets busy, I hope to remember to take each day as it comes and find the opportunity to embrace the slow moments when I can. taken in Calabria by @jessasimms

Normally I don’t take part in these things, but @my.life.in.colour challenged me to participate and post a B&W photo of myself and I have loved scrolling through my feed and seeing everyone else’s so... #challengeaccepted #kadınaşiddetehayır #istanbulsözleşmesiyaşatır

One of the things I have struggled with in the past is feeling I don’t have a voice. Sometimes this manifests itself in a physical feeling - I was sexually abused as a kid and when it happened I had a physical feeling of someone holding my vocal chords... not choking me... and there was actually no hand on my throat but it was a physical feeling of not being able to talk, to advocate for myself, to stand up for myself. This physical feeling would reoccur throughout my life if someone I interacted with triggered something by the way they spoke to me and treated me... sometimes it was a teacher, sometimes a boss, sometimes it was men I encountered, but other times... a lot of times... it was a woman. Times when I would want to speak up, but I physically couldn’t. My voice, my advocacy, my thoughts, my designs, my talent were all being prohibited by this pressure on my vocal chords. I was choking on my own words.

I had to work hard, not to get my voice, I had one all along, but to confront and strip away the power that my abuse had over me to trigger this physical feeling. After many tears and frustrations, therapy, and the hardest internal work I have ever done, I’ve been able to free my voice. I haven’t had this physical feeling in a long time. There are still tears, but instead of tears of frustration and defeat I’ve cried tears of joy. To come away from a situation, to walk away from a person, and to be suddenly hit with the awareness that I just spoke up, that I advocated for myself, that I expressed my feelings and ideas despite the fact that they may contradict with someone else’s and in circumstances where in the past I was made to stay silent and sometimes take verbal abuse or passive aggressiveness.... This is a victory for me and something that I celebrate. (Continued below in comments) taken in Zagreb, Croatia by @jessasimms

Seeing the Raffaello exhibit 😍 Don’t worry... Social distancing rules were strictly enforced - only a small number of people per room (wearing masks at all times) and standing a certain distance apart and we only got 5 minutes before being escorted to the next room by a museum staff member who made sure all social distancing rules were followed at all times #mymaskwasremovedforthisphoto #thenewnormal😷 #raffaello500 taken in Scuderie del Quirinale by @jessasimms

Sitting in the airport on a layover to Rome, excited to start this new chapter but also sad to leave. I’m not the best when it comes to social media, but have promised many friends that I would post regularly... since I haven’t really posted in a year I’ll be sharing a mix of my favorite memories this last year has brought me as well as some of my new adventures. My niece Marin was born this April and meeting her the day she was born was definitely a highlight! I’m glad I got these past few moths with her, but I am trying not to be sad at how much bigger she’ll be when I see her again in December for her first Christmas 🎄 🥰😭🇮🇹 🇺🇸 taken in Copenhagen Airport (CPH) by @jessasimms
