I never considered myself a daddy’s girl but as i think about all of the things this man has done for me and the things he has taught me, I will definitely say I am a daddy’s girl. When they said the chemo had a 75% chance of taking his hair out, we decided to cut the locs rather than let them fall out. We had hopes of him beating cancer and getting them reattached. We never put a period of his life. On Father’s Day-i knew it would be his last Father’s Day. It was the same day they told us that he may live 6 months. My daddy never complained. And they knew that he listened to whatever I told him so it was only right that I would be the one to cut his locs. He wasn’t happy about none of this cancer talk but he never complained. He never gave up. That wasn’t in his character. I thank God for showing me such strength in the man that is responsible for bringing me into this world. As Black Maternal Health Week comes to a close, I'd like to remember, honor, and lift up Aja Drummer. Aja was my first official doula client. She was such a vibe...hella smart, insightful, and intentional and she had a sweet spirit, kind heart, and she was super down to earth. When we met, we immediately clicked like we knew each other for years!

Aja tragically passed away last year over Labor Day weekend, less than a week shy of 24th birthday, and just one month before her due date. What made her passing even more devestating was the fact that they were not able to save her baby girl, sweet angel Jianni. Her family has had to mourn the loss of the loved one they knew and adored along with the loved one who's arrival they were excitedly anticipating.

Aja had an enlarged heart and passed away from dialated cardiomyopathy. Aja's mother has continued to keep me in the loop and she let me know that this condition, though not curable, it is 100% treatable as she herself was diagnosed with it at the age of 23. Though we have no way of knowing how much detail into her medical and family history was requested from her provider, we do know these heartbreaking stories are all too familiar in our community. We are always left with so many questions and what ifs!!

Aja was loved by her city, the families that she supported, her family and her beloved partner Jacobi. Her mother has setup a scholarship in her honor to bless those that have the same passion and fire for children and teaching as she did.
