Tea embodies a profound philosophy, transforming our perception of the world, and deepening our understanding of ourselves, others and life.

How has tea transformed you?

This is the alchemy of tea. A devoted love story. What an epic pilgrimage this continues to be. The way of tea is such that you reckon with yourself, ceaselessly. Tea is a great dharma. Take refuge, stay the path and trust in its beautiful process. by @jessbonintea

In his extraordinary work, The Book of Tea, Kakuzo Okakura offers more than a treatise on this magical elixir. He explores tea as a lens through which we can understand art, culture, and the nuanced philosophies of the East. Blending aesthetics with ethics, he reveals how the seemingly simple act of drinking and sharing tea reflects the values of harmony, humility, and the appreciation for impermanence. It is a quiet but pointed commentary on modernity, a defence of refined simplicity against industrial excess, and an invitation to see beauty not as ornament but as a way of being.

“In the liquid amber within the ivory-porcelain, the initiated may touch the sweet reticence of Confucius, the piquancy of Laotse, and the ethereal aroma of Sakyamuni himself.”

I have blended some of my favourite quotes from his introduction that communicate to me the essence of his prose. I hope to communicate the non-conceptual and experiential through the medium of sight and sound.

“Teaism is a cult founded on the adoration of the beautiful among the sordid facts of everyday existence. It inculcates purity and harmony, the mystery of mutual clarity, the romanticism of the social order. It is essentially a worship of the Imperfect, as it is a tender attempt to accomplish something possible in this impossible thing we know as life.

But when we consider how small after all the cup of human enjoyment is, how soon overflowed with tears, how easily drained to the dregs in our quenchless thirst for infinity, we shall not blame ourselves for making so much of the tea-cup.”

Why not consecrate ourselves to the queen of the Camellias, and revel in the warm steam of sympathy that flows from her altar?

For Teaism is the art of concealing beauty that you may discover it, of suggesting what you dare not reveal.”

September reflections 💃🪩🌸💨🫧🍵🍏💚🙇🏻‍♀️ Harmony, serenity, goodness, surrender and order. There is so much grace in the unpredictable, it provides abundant opportunities for Wu Wei. Effortless action is not without movement, it is anything but passive; it simply entails no striving, no escaping and no perceptions of how it should be, merely aligned response. It just is as it isness. It is both restraint and yearning as you move toward what is arising without needing to impose any will upon it.

This last month required receptive attention, participatory presence and a whole lot of discipline, both in acting and surrender.

Sensei taught on ‘Jaku’, and as always with the path of tea, it was poignant to my trials reflected through my practice. As I currently experience and understand Jaku, it is the stillness that emerges within disciplined action. “When striving has ceased”. Yet it is not without action, as it comes from it. “It is accessing the primordial flow through engaged immediacy”. This requires action, and yet it is stillness. Similar to Wu Wei. And from this place, magic emerges.

And now it’s Libra season and birthday month! Time to play. by @jessbonintea

My first attempt at Koicha with my new Kama Furo. Coal and all.

It took me about 5 hours to get the ash here, and my OCD cooked me with perceptions of imperfection not imperfect enough. Much harder that I anticipated, but the meditative concentration and one minded absorption was delicious.

Finding consistent sized and shaped coals true to requirements was also a challenge, especially as it was the first time establishing an understanding of the heating capacity.

Balance in all things in the practice.

And so heating began.

As sensei says, Koicha begins when the tea is sieved.

Mini Fuji. I used @thealchemyoftea “ceremonial” matcha. It has a fantastic profile for Keiko (tea practice) and handles well for thick tea (Koicha).

My 100th attempt to fold my Fukusa over the makeshift “chaire” (tea caddy). I am thankful to years of origami play.

The set up. Loving my imported and very fragile chawan.

Managed to finish this Koicha in 80 whisks. #goals

For the guest of no guest. Me.

My plants get matcha infused waste water.

“To have the mind
to enter this path (of tea), is indeed,
to have an inherent teacher.” ~ 001.

In the learning process, watch and learn;
voicing opinions without having done
this is foolishness.” ~ 002.

The only way to get to the unknown is through the known.

Milarepa explains this beautifully in his songs, and I paraphrase: “Enlightenment will never be won without the integration of method and wisdom through the skill of method.”

I appreciate the path of tea for its method. It is unfailing. A navigation system that ensures the ship will always find its coarse, even when the seas are torrent and the skies dark. It is the raft, the ocean and the shore. And it is utterly liberated and free. Just like the Tao.

The above quoted paragraphs are a lesser translation of Rikyū’s Hundred Verses, verses 001 and 002. Sensei’s translation in comparison communicates the essence, the feeling and the nature like a tree with infinite branches, each word a galaxy. by @jessbonintea

Jessica’s relationship with matcha began in 2012. After discovering the incredible practice of Chanoyu, the Japanese Matcha tea ceremony, she travelled to Japan in 2014 for the first time to learn its depths. Upon her return, she founded south Africa’s first matcha brand, introducing it commercially to restaurants, cafes and retail outlets, establishing matcha as an enjoyable latte experience across the country.

For the past 16 years, Jessica has studied and worked with tea, developing a deep respect for matcha’s history, origins and culture, while dedicating herself to the traditional practice as a formal student of Chanoyu.

Jade Samurai is an expression of that journey, and a lifelong commitment to the custodianship of matcha.
