Finger Towels for the Ladies. 2026.

I began my Berea Craft Fellowship Research in the Hutchins Library Special Collections digging through papers belonging to former heads of Fireside Weaving: Anna Enberg and Lena Mae Elkin to ground myself in the history of the program. I found samples of the Fireside Finger Towels and sales pamphlets from the early 1900s which included the text featured in these weavings.

Finger Towels for the Ladies and A Guest Towel for the Men Folks. 2026.

My towels honor the craftsmanship and design of the Fireside towels but also poke-fun at the gender essentialist tone of the pamphlet as well as “His & Hers” monograms. I question whether the “daintiness” of the Finger Towels would have been sufficient for the “ladies” of the time and if any “men folks” ever actually disapproved enough to request a larger towel? Perhaps what they all desired and deserved was in fact a guest towel of a more equitable size or a wider variety of sizes, regardless of gender.

Scrappy Lil Berea Ducks. 2026.

I then spent time in the Appalachian Teaching Archive with woven objects and the Fireside Stuffed Toys. I fell in love with a small stuffed duck made from a scrap of a Coverlet, not a toy ever put into production but likely the creation of a student gone rogue. The Student Craft of the past seemed rigid and stuck in a cycle of repeating pattern without fully engaging with meaning; whereas the Student Craft I have had the joy to spend time in is a holistic environment where student laborers are human beings and students first and foremost. They create new designs for products while learning from caring and knowledgeable staff. These Lil Scrappy Ducks combine a pattern from a potentially rebellious past and the contemporary materials of Berea Student Craft. by @jesseesatt

Announcing our Fiber Studio AIR 2026-27, Jesse Satterfield! @jesseesatt
We are thrilled to have Jesse joining us this year in the studio at the Appalachian Center for Craft and as an Adjunct Instructor here at Tennessee Tech! We’ll be sure to show you more of Jesse’s work all year and also follow Jesse @jesseesatt to learn more! Welcome, Jesse!

“Jesse Satterfield was raised in a tourist trap on the Jersey Shore and spent his adolescence working as a boardwalk carnival barker— handing out fuzzy, stuffed prizes to sunburnt New Yorkers with bad attitudes. He suffered for several years as a fine art framer, production seamster, upholsterer, and workroom manager in the commercial interior design industry before returning to Fine Art and Academia. He holds an MFA in Textiles from Kent State University, as well as an MA in Critical Studies and BFA in Fibers from the Maryland Institute College of Art. ”

Returning after a joyful whirlwind two-week session of teaching at @penlandschool connecting with brilliant colleagues, new and old, has been thrilling. “Weaving Beyond the Binary” was weird and unpredictable in all the best ways. Thank you to an incredible group of students who worked hard, brought vision and ambition to their making, and supported one another so much—it’s been a privilege to work with each of you. Shout out and huge thank you to @jesseesatt for your amazing work as the studio assistant fellow for the course—students becoming colleagues is a unique pleasure. This session, my workshop was in tandem with another taught by @susiebrandt and @piper_shepard , my own professors from MICA Fiber some 20 years ago. Teaching alongside you both has been an absolute joy, thank you @penlandtextiles for making that magic happen. Again soon!! #weavingbeyondthebinary #contemporaryweaving #materialpractice #penlandtextiles #penlandschoolofcrafts by @jesseesatt
