I'm very excited to announce that the documentary House of Hope (‎بيت الأمل) will have its World Premiere at @idfafestival, screening November 14th at Carré in Amsterdam. Selected for the Luminous section and nominated for Best Dutch Documentary.

Together with @yamen.martini I composed the score for this amazing film by @marjoleinbusstra. Additional guitar by Erik van Woudenberg (@wasbeerik) also played an important role in the score.

House of Hope is an intimate film about Manar, a Palestinian woman who runs a pacifist Waldorf school in the occupied West Bank with her husband Milad. In the midst of a genøcide, they continue to provide a safe haven for children - a space where hope is taught, not as abstractions, but as daily acts of courage.

Seventeen years ago, director Marjolein Busstra met Manar for the first time in the West Bank. What began as a friendship slowly grew into a film - a portrait born out of deep trust. Three years ago, Marjolein decided to turn her camera towards her friend. It wasn’t to make a statement, but to listen - to witness how Manar continues to nurture hope, resilience and connection amid escalating violence under Israeli occupation.

“Palestinians are so much more than what we see in the news or mainstream outlets” says May Jabareen from Philistine Films. Filmed in close collaboration with a Palestinian crew, and featuring cinematography by Abu Mosab, a Dutch-Palestinian D.o.P., this project has always been guided by the principle that Palestinian voices and perspectives belong not just in front of the camera, but behind it too.

Produced by @100prcnt.film, co-produced by @philistinefilms, in collaboration with @omroepzwart. Distributed by @cinemadelicatessen, with support from the Netherlands Film Fund, NPO-fund, and others.
 In Dutch theaters from December 11th.

I think I first heard this record about 15 years ago through some internet music blog. Been searching for a vinyl version for a while and finally found an affordable re issue during my stay in Ghent. Hoe klinkt eenzaamheid? Voor Sounds of Loneliness vroegen we kunstenaars om daar een nieuw werk over te maken. Ze gingen aan de slag met hun eigen ideeën en met verhalen en herinneringen van bewoners.

In november laten ze hun werk horen. En we nodigen je graag uit om erbij te zijn.

We komen naar drie plekken in Amsterdam-Oost en Diemen. Na het luisteren praten we met de makers en met elkaar. Over de muziek natuurlijk, maar ook over wat je daarin herkent of wat je juist verbaast. Je hoeft niets van muziek te weten en alleen luisteren mag ook.

Meet the Third Character 2026 selection

On October 8, selected composers will head to Ghent for the Third Character Film Music Composition Market. During a series of one-on-one meetings at the WSA Film Music Days, they’ll meet producers and directors working on film projects that have yet to find their composer. A chance to pitch their work, exchange ideas and find the common creative ground from which a new collaboration might grow.

René Ahoud
Composer

René Ahoud creates storytelling music for film and media, blending acoustic and electronic elements with orchestral textures. With a background in sonology, sound engineering and audio post-production, his work explores how sound shapes emotion, narrative and perception.

Mojan Alaiyeh
Composer & musician

Amsterdam-based composer and musician Mojan Alaiyeh works across concert music, film and interdisciplinary performance. Rooted in classical training and Iranian musical traditions, she brings contemporary and traditional influences together in emotionally charged work exploring memory, identity and belonging.

Rafaele Andrade
Composer, conductor & musician

Brazilian composer, conductor and musician Rafaele Andrade works across film, theatre and live performance. Her practice moves between intimate acoustic writing and electroacoustic soundscapes, with her self-built instrument Knurl combining electronics, 3D printing and creative coding.

Mert Gençer
Composer, sound designer & audiovisual artist

Amsterdam-based composer, sound designer and audiovisual artist Mert Gençer works across film, documentaries, new media and installations. His multidisciplinary practice brings composition, sound design and moving image together, with a strong focus on atmosphere and narrative.

Merel van Hoek
Composer, multi-instrumentalist & producer

Dutch composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer Merel van Hoek creates cinematic instrumental music at the intersection of neoclassical, ambient and indie. Floating guitars, lyrical melodies and textured electronics shape an intimate, cinematic sound rooted in emotion and storytelling.
