Here’s to a new journey. Hi, I’m Jessica. I’m 42. 4 years ago I got Covid. Like the debilitating kind. My body went into a cytokine storm, I lost partial vision for a few months. I developed depression for the first time in my life. I developed migraines that would give me tunnel vision and then just randomly go away. I developed cyclical severe OCD/ PMDD. I became allergic to detergent. Then I wasn’t. I get hives on my chest. Then it goes away. The list goes on. When I tell you I tried everything, I exaggerate not! I went completely nontoxic. It helped. But then I’d have these sort of “flares” - hard to describe. We sold our coffee shop to ease stress. That helped tremendously. I began HRT, and what was immediately odd was the Progesterone was a “meh,” but the .5mg Testosterone troche was life changing! It makes sense now, which I’ll explain later. I was symptom-free, until a terrifying scare at the beach with Sara (age 10), and then my body went into another “flare” as I began calling them. To shorten the story, I took a random Zyrtec one day, and I noticed “Hmm, my stuffy nose is gone but so is my guilty, sick feeling.” After deep research, I learned this was a thing. I began taking Zyrtec alongside a Pepcid in the evenings, and - holy crap- is my depression & OCD going away? Yes. It was.
There is a documented link between long covid and MCAS/histamine intolerance. The daunting pieces of the last 4 years of my life began to finally fit. I went back and checked my genetic testing I had gotten years ago. The ONLY marker I was positive in my testing for- MCAS.
I started seeking a formal diagnosis & treatment, only to find a waitlist years long. Wow. Guess I’m not alone in this. But here’s the thing. I’ll be on the waitlist but it doesn’t change what’s working. Testosterone is a mast cell stabilizer. Makes sense why it was so life- changing for me. All of the symptoms I described earlier? Textbook post-viral MCAS/histamine intolerance.
Today I begin my low-histamine journey. Soooo many people are going through exactly the same as me, so I’d love to share my journey of functional medicine with you. Here we go 🤍 by @jessicalsteele
