Can you spot them all? My collection of moths (made this year) and butterflies (made the previous year) on a fine art print of my paper flowers made in 2019 (flower tutorials in my books, ‘Paper Flower Art’ & ‘Paper Flowers’). I’m going to return to my birds & flowers soon, but before that, would you be interested in a Luna Moth course? Let me know in the polls!

Today is the first day of the YOU ARE HERE Exhibition at @visualartsmississauga. This piece, Quickening (Irises, hellebores, tulips, daffodils, fritillaries, muscari), along with my second piece, Awakening, will be on display until June 18th. Come talk art with me at the Reception on Friday June 18th 7-9pm! I found a lot of joy composing these images and for the very first time, I made it entirely for myself.

I first made paper Shirley Grey poppies in 2019. It was nice to return to it after all these years and surprisingly, I didn’t deviate from my original techniques other than making chunkier stamens. I used my dwindling stash of @dmcolor to achieve the grey-purples on the delicate @cartotecnicarossi 60g crepe paper. I love how I can layer colours so easily. Special thanks to @sassevillefloral for sharing her beautiful poppy photos with me for inspiration. I couldn’t make any of my work without the enduring support from my flower friends.

I’ve been a bit quiet sharing my work these past few months because it’s been a slow go. I injured my right elbow a few months back (damn you Reformer Pilates!) and what was an acute elbow injury is now full blown tendinosis. I’m seeing an acupuncturist and a physiotherapist. I ice when I can stand still (which is like never) and take an aspirin when I really need my arm to work without pain. But with two kids and a household and business to run…it’s almost impossible not to use my right arm! Whoever said 40 is the new 30 is dead wrong. My biological age is, without a doubt, mid-life. And the speed of my recovery? Like I’m 80. Any suggestions??

In the meantime, here’s some of my paper Shirley Grey poppies inspired by those in @sassevilleflorals flower farm. Thanks to Annie for sending me her beautiful photos of them.

Sincerely, Left Hand Typer

Hello! If you’re new to my account - let me introduce myself. I’m Jessie, and I’m an artist that grows/collects/takes pictures of flowers and re-interprets them in paper. I mainly work with crepe paper, but I also dabble in other types of papers (and clay) when it feels right. Some flowers inspire me to paint them; some inspire me to capture their movement. I initially worked only in 3D sculpture, and later incorporated photography in my practice. I make art to process and understand my personal transformation from the discoveries I make in the natural world.

I’m so grateful that you’re here! taken in Mississauga, Ontario by @jessie.chui

I want to tell you what I did this weekend. For the first time, @pinkandposey @handmadebysarakim and I hosted a Paper Talk Mastermind retreat for our members in Seattle, WA.

We stayed in a beautiful house just minutes from the airport and bonded over charcuterie on night one with wonderful entrepreneurial friends @hemleva,@threebrothersblooms, @amegirl76, @dsakaki, and @yvonnewongphoto. We spent the next day antique shopping in Snohomish, lunch dating with @flirtyfleurs and @newcreationswed, and dancing through a field of gorgeous dahlias at @the.dahlia.house. Our members went home with a load of goodies, sponsored by the amazing @aleenesdiy @plaidcrafts @kaiscissors and @petalsandpearlsflowers.

We had hours of real conversation in the three days we were together. I am so proud that everyone walked out pitching their business with total confidence. That’s what real community does. We support and elevate each other. And I’m so thankful that we can do that for each other in our Mastermind and beyond.

Our new Mastermind sessions starts September 8th. I hope you’ll join us! taken in Seattle, Washington by @jessie.chui

Never underestimate the power of learning something new, the wonder of finding beauty, or simply the joy of making art with new and old friends alike. I had a blast teaching a group of wonderful ladies how I make a paper pansy at @sewandbloom last week. Covie has really been able to pull together (with her magnetic personality of course) a great group of people into her circle, who she calls “bloominaries”. I loved the conversations we had with one another, everyone’s overwhelming enthusiasm for my art form, and the incredible results (just look at their paper flowers!) of their patience. It was a memorable reminder to myself of why teaching and introducing my art form to others still fills me with so much joy and continues to be one of the most fulfilling aspect of my practice. taken in Cambridge, Massachusetts by @jessie.chui
